TIMING GEAR QUESTION

Postby rleggitt » Sun Dec 05, 2004 8:45 pm

Hello All,

I am putting "Windy" back together and there is no "single" punch mark
on the idler gear between the crankshaft drive gear and the governor
drive gear.

The question is: how many gear teeth/or valleys is there between the
"double punch" mark on the idler gear, counting either clockwise or
counter clockwise?

From looking in the ship manual it appears that the "single" punch mark
would be two tooth valleys "counter clockwise" from 180 degrees across from the "double" punch mark.

Thanks for the help.

This is all I can tell you. Have not put one together since 2002. Clicking on the bottom right will make the picture bigger.

Hey Russ,

Check the back side of the idler gear.

I had to line them up through the distributer mounting hole. You could not see the marks clearly because of the dist seal. I used a mirror because it was sun afternoon and no replacements available.

Yep it is on the back I thought the page I posted would say that. I remember using white paint on a tooth pick to help line them up.

Timing gears

Postby Eugene » Sun Dec 05, 2004 10:23 pm

No marks or multiple marks on the idler gear and distributor gear.

Put the #1 cylinder on TDC with the notch in the pulley lined up on the pointer. Remove the distributor cap. Point the rotor to the #1 tower location. Install the distributor. The rotor will move (beveled gears) so that it doesn't line up with #1 tower location. Pull the distributor and reverse the rotor direction by the amount the rotor was off durng the first installation. Then reinstall. It may take two or three tries.

You've got to make sure the gear is clean. Those marks are very hard to find but I'll bet $$ that they're there.
