Overhaul Complete

Postby Harold R » Thu Dec 09, 2010 7:52 am

I finally got around to getting my Dad's tractor going with the newly overhauled '48 engine. Everything was standard size in the engine. The cylinders had very little wear, so we went back with standard size rings. The crankshaft journals measured out with very little wear as well, so all standard inserts were used. Turns out to be a real nice running engine. We have more work to do, but it's mostly cosmetic from this point forward.

Looks like a winner Harold. Thanks for sharing. And to think I let that one get away. :(
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Mike, that's the engine from it. Dad's got the dash and the hood at his place doing some work on them. He'll be using the bolster and radiator as well from Merlin's tractor. He just finished rebuilding the steering housing, complete with new brass bushings that he made. We hope to bolt all that together next week.

Wait, so will this engine go back into the original tractor, or will those parts, radiator and bolster, etc, go into another project tractor?

Dad has had a '48 cub for a few years now. It had a tired motor and the hood was for a mid '50's cub. The good part of his tractor was from the torque tube back. The tired engine had been bored to the max and had a repaired ear, (Held up good though). The bolster had the usual freeze crack, but it too had been repaired well. Bigdog's tractor, (from Merlin) was a '48 and had all good parts except the front spindles had been welded. The price was reasonable so Dad got it in hopes of being able to use the engine and the dash/hood set up.....just to keep his a '48 model. Dad's drivetrain was nice and quiet, so we opted to keep it as is. We will be using his front axle too. When you have two tractors side by side.....both needing the others parts....it's hard to figure which way to go. Either way, he'll have a 1948 cub. It will run good, and should look good as well.

Harold, I hope you don't think that I was showing any consternation at your project! Quite the opposite!!

I think it is cool that his '48 will be all '48! It would also be cool to make that other tractor back into a "muttly" tractor, too!! It would be good for rolling around, at least!

What I find fascinating about the '48 is the low hours the engine must on it after 62 years.

Indeed that was a pleasant surprise. Over all, the tractor looked like it had an easy life. All the bolt holes in the final drives looked like they never had a bolt in them. Tin wasn't all beat up, and the radiator looked brand new....all cooling fins were straight, and the original overflow tube was intact, with the short clip that holds it to the bolster at the bottom. 8)
