I've had great success using "Stainless" arc rods on cast iron ,steel or any combination ! Far better flow than nickel ,with little or no "pre-heating ( also peen with ball peen hammer on cool down ), I use DC on the welder for stainless , I think AC should also work , check with welding rod supplier (if you only have AC) ,before you buy those expensive rods !
