Rear wheels won't turn - HELP

Postby Winfield Dave » Fri Dec 24, 2010 5:48 pm

I went to pick up my latest Cub today...it was supposed to be a runner when it was parked 5 months ago...
Image
Any way...when I went to winch it up on the trailer the back wheels wouldn't turn...they just slide on the ground.
I checked to make sure it was in neutral...it was [kinda hard to tell - shifter is sloppy]
We tried pulling it to work the wheels free but no luck.
Pulled off the shifter cover:
Image
Everything was stiff...it seemed like the fingers weren't sliding on the rails, just the rails sliding forward and backward.

Jacked up the rear end...the wheels would turn in opposite directions only...never both in the same direction.
Pulled the rear cover off the transmission:
Image
the oil?? was like real "loose" cement.

I need your help...I'm new in the transmission arena...
I can't get this home until I get the wheels turning.

Thanks in advance guys.
Dave

There is likely ice in the bottom of the transmission or in the finals. You'll have to get it melted to move the tractor.

Just what I was thinking when I read the posting. Tarp it and get some heat under there some way to warm it up a bit. I wouldn't force it much until then for fear of braking something inside.

The rails are suppose to slide back and forth, the "fingers" are not suppose to slide on the rails. Under all the gunk and oil you probably have some that northern "hard water" AKA, ice that is preventing the wheels from rolling because it has frozen the pinion shaft and lower gears in the transmission. Put some heat on the bottom of the trans case and drain the water, and then you can probably move it.

A 100 watt bulb should do the job.

Thanks Paul.

Should any of the gears turn freely when normal [not frozen]?

If it isn't iced up try to jiggle those shift fingers and get them totally in line. They look just a small bit out of line. Probably not be enough to lock between gears but every attempt helps. If your rear wheels are turning in opposite directions as you say, then something is freed up inside.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

if it is not ice. You may have both shifter forks in the forward position

You must have been a good boy this year, Dave! Santa brought you another "new" Cub!! :{_}:

I agree with the others. Put some heat under the rear end and try again. It will take a while to thaw out any ice inside. If you use a light bulb, put it close to the area where you suspect the ice to be and cover it up with a tarp and leave it for a day or two to thaw out. A salamander or other heater will work quicker but it will still require some time for the ice to melt. You may want to put a bucket under it and drain out the oil and leave the plug out until you get it home.

Good luck!!

Dave, I had the same thing happen a week ago when i went to move a cub that was outdoors, i jacked up the back end and with two of us trying to turn each of the tires by hand and it broke free after about 10 seconds of that

Pinion shaft is frozen in ice this is why the wheels are turning in opposiate directions

Cover the rear end with a tarp and point a jet heater under it from several feet away. Wait a few hours.
Best,
Mike

Since the wheels turn you at least know the finals aren't frozen.
