I just welded a cracked bolster exactly like that, not hard to do at all. I would make it run

I have no experience welding cast iron...although it's not like welding a final or some other structural part...
and the water pressure isn't that high, I would think, in a thermosiphon system.

Another indication of it being an earlier cub is the steering arm post. Earlier cubs have the larger radius curve on the post like yours. You can see the sharper radius on Peter's cub. Alittle TLC and she'll be a beauty

Everything points to this being an earlier Cub. It looks like the original hood decals. Can you tell if it was a "McCormick" or "McCormick-Deering"? Also, what is the engine serial number? A comparison of all the casting codes will tell you a lot.

Re: New 1957 Cub in Winfield "Den"
Thanks for all the comments guys...
Just to let you know...the "parts tractor" comments were made to the PO just to justify my price...
Unless I find something major broken, this one is a keeper.
Initially all I have found is the cracked bolster...no other cracks on ears or finals, etc.
When I first looked at it, I tried to hand crank it to make sure the motor turns, but it appears the notches are worn off the pulley.
Yesterday it spun with a jump to the starter.
PO's friend had pulled the carb to "fix" it...it came with the Cub separately...I'm going to clean it up today, put the pony tank on it and try to fire it up.
Won't be able to run it long without water, but I'd like to hear it run...[you know how it is on Christmas - kids want to play with their toys].
PS. if anyone is interested in the "different looking" cultivators, PM me for pics.

You could call it "Floppy" because of the headlights or "Misty" because of the misty blue paint.

How about "lil bit". Because it is a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
Also, I love those rear treads. what is the name brand on those rear tires? Any chance in saving them?
Good Luck.

With the lights pointed down like that, it looks like the ole' cub is sleeping or it's eyes or closed....how about SHUT EYES

Re: New 1957 Cub in Winfield "Den"
Dave, I've have had real great success welding cast iron and regular steel or any combination , with "Stainless" arc rods, with little or no pre-heating , and only an inch at a time ,cool-down ,peening with a "ball peened hammer" , the job looks good , the flow is better than the nickel rods ! If it would ever break, it would in the middle of the stainless , not where it bonds to the cast iron ! Hope this helps, Lee

Re: New 1957 Cub in Winfield "Den"
I agree with Lee ,I always use stainless but its even easier if you have a d/c welder and set it up for reverse polarity
