Re: Enamel Reducer
All "enamel" paint is not the same. Case 2150 is alkyd enamel and reducers are typically used with acrylic enamels.
A thinner is not the same as a reducer. Reducers do thin the paint but also control the evaporation time to prevent the solvent blush. Naphtha and mineral spirits will work as a thinner but may not evaporate at the correct speed depending on the temperature. Acrylic enamel reducers can be used with alkyd enamel and is what I would do. There is no generic reducer since they are formulated for a specific temperature range. Slow, medium, fast, medium slow, etc are common descriptions and will all have their own temperature ranges. If you are going to buy NAPA reducer then they should have the spec sheets for the temp ranges and then just get the one you need. For good paint, I would not mix brands of paint and reducers but for something like 2150 paint it will not matter.
Use a real reducer for your temp range. Don't use mineral spirits, naptha, acetone.
You can clear coat acrylic enamel, I have $300 of clear sitting in my barn waiting to paint my cub. You should be able to clear coat alkyd enamel with acrylic clear but I am not sure why you would want to. If you want to clear coat, buy a good base coat, acrylic enamel or urethane, and then clear. You would not typically clear coat a single stage paint although when I use 2 stage I also get a quart of single stage for the bolt heads etc...

Re: Enamel Reducer
8098 I believe is primer. They sell many types of reducer so there would be many part numbers. You may just want to call a NAPA store that mixes the paint to get the number for the temperature you need. CR 231 to CR 236 are some reducer numbers. CR 232 would be a useful temp range at least for my area.

Thanks to everyone for the information. So it looks like I can get the Napa reducer and mix it with 2150 - 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner.....
I attempted to brush on some Rustoleum tonight on my rims - that was not successful. I guess I'll have to reduce and spray it as well.

Re: Enamel Reducer
I recently bought a gallon of CR232 ,for some acrylic enamel I was spraying. I got a little sticker shock from the price, almost $50! It will work well with the 2150 but I think there should be a less expensive alternative. The local NAPA says they sell the same reducers for both alkyd and acrylic.

Re: Enamel Reducer
if you have an auto body supply store nearby they probably sell a generic reducer that will be close to half the price of the name brand, i've used it before and it works well.

Re: Enamel Reducer
We used to have a lower priced automotive paint store near-by who sold some of the lower priced paints & materials. They handled the Limco brand, a side line of BASF, seemed to be pretty good stuff at a reasonable price. Of course, they closed their doors! I miss those guys!

Re: Enamel Reducer
According to the NAPA paint web site, 8098 is primer. May want to double check before ordering any.
When I use NAPA reducer, it is one of the CR 232-233 and it is expensive but nothing compared to the low VOC reducers.
Any inexpensive reducer in the correct temp range should work for 2150.
The Case 2150 paint is already thin and Case recommends 8:1 paint:reducer. 2:1 will be kind of thin but what ever works for you. Too much solvent can cause the paint to look chalky.
Auto paint often is 8:4:1 or 2:1.
Inexpensive paint is often 8:1.

Re: Enamel Reducer
Dupont's Centari line is an 8:1 ratio as well. Is a really good match for the CaseIH Iron Gard. Been 7 years and it hasn't faded yet on my blade nor has it chipped. I like the 2150 with the Centari Reducer and Hardener.
Centari is neither cheap nor expensive. I think it is around $25.00 a gallon for the reducer at NAPA's CMax Auto Finishes storefront.

Rudi, do you have part numbers for the Centari reducer and hardener?
Napa gave me a price of $45 for a gallon of CR 234, but would not make a recommendation for the hardener. They recommended the hardener, but would not say which one I should buy.
The Centari sounds like a good deal unless that price is 7 years old

John:
That was a Canadian price -- we always pay more for stuff . I will say this.. I get contractor/bodyshop pricing because I have been dealing with them for 25 years. That might affect it a tad -- about 10% or so thankfully. However, a gallon is way more than anyone will need for a Cub. A quart should be sufficient. Remember is is an 8:1:1 cut if you use CaseIH/Centari Reducer/Centari Hardener. Your local paint shop will have the mixing sticks with the recipe for Centari/Dupont as well as Nason and PPG I think on the stick. I usually mix in my gun's pot.
Dupont Centari
Centari® 8022S™ Reducer 70-85°F (21-29°C)
DuPont™ 8105S™ Activator
DuPont™ 3602S™ Thinner - for cleanup

Re: Enamel Reducer
There are some advantages to auto paint. The total cost difference likely would be around $75 dollars. You go to an auto paint shop or NAPA, get the paint, reducer, harderner, and importantly, a spec sheet that tells the mixing ration, recoat times, flash times, etc... for that paint system. No need to mix and match and guess. That way you know it is right. I have no doubt Case 2150 will work with any name brand reducer and likely work with any name brand hardener for acrylic enamel but what will be the flash and recoat times for that mix? Same as Centari? Maybe not.
From the spec sheet on Centari paint, the mixing ratio is 8:2:1 paint:reducer:hardener not 8:1. That's why you should look at the spec sheet for both the paint, mixing ratio, recoat times, etc and the reducer for the temp range. The spec sheets, which are on line, will also give an idea of the solids etc and the potential quality of the paint.
I get disposable mixing cups to mix the paint, pour through a strainer into the paint cup. Napa will give you plenty of mixing sticks and strainers for free. Don't mix in the cup. One clog and you will wish you used a strainer.
