Dash

Postby Harold R » Sun Jan 09, 2005 11:33 am

I was wondering about the arrangement of dash panels when it comes to the ammeter, light switch, fuse and on-off switch. I have seen various arrangements. I have installed a 3-position switch, ammeter that is not original, batt. ignition push-pull switch, and a 20 amp fuse holder. I'm not sure of the "correct-ness" of the 3-position switch, but I have installed a 6 volt system w/voltage reg. I plan on front and rear lights. All this to return the tractor to 6 volts. It was easier 12v, :( but not as challenging.

As you can see, I downloaded a couple of wiring diagrams to help.

I think the arrangement was different from IH for different years. The 40's Cubs had the light switch in the middle and ignition switch button on the bottom...no fuse on panel but behind the panel.

Judging by what is shown though this looks like the way IH did it in the later 50's...Is you Cub maybe a '59 :?: or '60. Looks like that year from the light switch...and this looks correct to me.

Nice paint job :!:

This is my '50 model. I have a 4 position switch with a different knob, but the switch is no good. I found a 3 position on e-bay that was in fairly good shape. I assume it's for "off-dim-bright". Maybe rear light comes on with the bright position? I could use the knob of the old one for looks I guess. I feel sure that my '50 came with the batt. ignition and distributor.
(s/n 114646). I'm just trying to do the right thing and bring this tractor back to some sort of originality. 8) 8)

Like Mike said, the dash arrangement change several times. The earliest ones were as he described (if the tractor had electrical components installed).

In mid-'49 (serial 75936) they changed to look like hr's picture, except no fuse holder and the earlier style light switch knob. I think that knob came in late '54.

The fuse holder was added the same time they went to battery ignition, which the documents list as serial 115540, mid '50. Note that is a bit higher than hr's s/n 114646, so we have a discrepancy there.

Well..if you are going for original  ..50's Cubs electric systems are hard to track. They came with both battery ignitions and mag ignitions..technically i think your tractor would have come with a mag. They changed to battery ignition and better generator with the regulator around SN 115400. The regulator eliminated the need to have the high/low charge 4 position lighting switch so the three position switch is the right one for your set up.

To make it more interesting  ..some earlier 50's Cubs were upgraded to the battery ignition later on. I guess if I were you i would assume this is what occurred on your Cub and go from there

I think the root of the guess work with my tractor is that it came from the Highway Dept. fleet, which means parts were swapped often to keep the most number of machines going. Of course, there were several owners afterwards, so my mission with this tractor is to be at least close to correct. It does have a later s/n for the motor which may explain the distributor and fuse set-up. I'm having fun with it, and I guess that's what really counts.

Harold:

Aside from the ammeter your dash is setup exactly like my wife's uncle's Cub. He has a 51 and it is identical to yours. His his all original. So I guess for a possibly cobbled Cub, you have done a great job putting it back together.

And yes, the main object is to have fun and enjoy your Cubs :!:

You have everything placed in your dash correctly. The rear light comes on with dim lights
