Any help locating the Zerk fitting for the Cub PTO housing?

Postby Mike Duncan » Mon Jan 17, 2005 11:03 am

I am still tearing into my '50 Cub; replacing seals, painting the parts, etc. as I go along. I recently discovered the "hole" in the PTO housing that at first I had no idea what it was there for.

After reviewing my neighbors Cub, I see that there is supposed to be a Zerk fitting there.

The fittings that I'm familar with are the thread in type, but these apparently just press in?

Anyone know where I can obtain this type of fitting as I haven't had any luck yet. Thanks Mike D

Just about any good auto supply store (NAPA) or tractor / implement dealer will have them. Our local cub cadet / hardware dealer stocks them as well since some of the mower decks use them.

I don't recall that one being a press in though.

I didn't remember that either, but the parts book calls for a 3/16 x 65 degree drive in, part number 273359. That number indicates a standard item rather than IH only. And as BD said, most farm equipment and supply places as well as "real" auto parts stores normally carry them.

If it helps... the angled one (45 degrees) on the touch control rock shaft collar looks pretty similar and was missing on mine (apparently for a number of years) and I had the hardest time figuring that one out.... It is not threaded, it is the press in (barbed) kind.

They look pretty similar, you should be able to tell by the parts book (end pages have where used)

Hey Mike...If you can't locate a press-in zerk fiting for your PTO, you might just want to ge a small tube of LITHIUM GREASE and SQUEEZE it into the hole  . It doesn't take much grease as George said, and a little bit will go a LONG way if you're not planning to use your PTO much :D .

If I were you I would drill and tap the hole for a screw-in fitting. I've never had good luck replacing a drive-in fitting once they come out.

Best,
Mike

I don't think the sidewalls are thick enoufh for a threaded fitting since the hole is all ready drilled. You can get an injection needle for sealed bearings that could be used to sqirt grease into the bearing through the hole, but would need something to keep dirt out.

I guess things change over time. I was in town today and checked around, and it seems that none of my old suppliers stock the drive in angle fittings. I did find them at Mc Master-Carr. They are under "machinery maintenace" - "grease fittings". Then look for the section "grease fittings.........2004". You may need to call them however since they do show the 65 degree ones, but don't list them. It looks like however they are minimum of 10 at aobut $2.55 each.

Canadian Tire, WalMart, NAPA and other local auto parts stores carry them here in the backwoods of New Brunswick.

I would imagine Walmart, PEP Boys, AutoZone etc., would carry them. They are usually in 2 or 3 packs for $1.99

I had a hard time finding the drive in kind with a 45 on it. I would have to look at the rock shaft to see if I ever did find one. These are a bit larger than what is used on autos. I definitely have the threaded ones.... but did not tap it, so if you are going to go that route send me a message and I will mail one to you. It should fit after tapping cause it won't go in the hole now.

Guys:

Go to http://www.princessauto.com

Download the big catalog in Adobe PDF. The zerks are all there. They stock the drive in type in the main warehouse as well as ALL the stores.

Besides, they are cheap, fit inside a regular envelope, made in the states so no duty on going home!
