Well after 3 months of evenings and weekends I've finally got the Cub running again. I've still got a whole "Lurker Carl" rebuild to do on the carb (he's right, the aftermarket kits are useless), and the tank is going to the radiator shop for a cleaning and coating, but I am so relieved to have it running again.
I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for their help and advice. I couldn't have done it without you.
p.s.
I too started it with a homemade crank

Congratulations! There's nothing like hearing one come to life after sitting for a while or after major surgery (repair / rebuild).

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

To echo John and BD - Congratulations
I know exactly how you must be feeling. It is great isn't it to be able to bring one of theses beauties back to life again.
Can't wait till I can get back out to the shop to play..... Granny awaits
