Thanks Farmallcub49 - fires right up with rebuilt magento.

Postby rick 48 cub » Sun Feb 06, 2005 2:23 pm

I was very relieved yesterday when my 48 cub fired right up after I installed the freshly rebuilt magneto. I removed the magneto about a month ago. I took it all apart and removed all the layers of grease and paint with a brass wire brush. I had a professional (recommended by Farmallcub49) replace several parts including the coil and other small components.

I installed the mag lined up with a ink mark I made on the housing. She started on the second try. Later in the day, it started on the first try!

Prior to this, I would have to crank MANY times for several minutes while adjusting the throttle and choke.

With my old timing light I noticed that the timing peg is almost lined up with a notch on the crank shaft pully. Does a perfectly timed engine have the crank shaft pully mark lined up right on the peg at 1,000+ RPM?

Thanks, Rick

the mark should be lined up when the impulse trips at hand cranking speed. At running speed it should be 16 degrees before the mark. I don't have the distance handy, but can get it later in the week. I posted the distance a few weeks ago, but don't remember the topic name.

Thanks for all of your advice and help - I have never owned a cub before.

As it happens, my old high-tech timing light has an adjustible timing advance knob on the handle. It sounds like I can just set it to 16 degrees and line up the timing marks.

Am I correct in assuming that half to 3/4 throttle will bring me up to the RPMs for setting the 16 degree advance ?

Also, when using a timing light, is the proper spark plug/wire the one closest to the radiator ?

I am surpised the tractor runs so smooth with the timing off by 16 degrees. As it happens, the lower distributer retaining bolt was adjusted all the way to the right edge of the slot on the distributer housing. Therefore, if a counterclockwise turn (looking from the drivers seat) does not increase the advance, I am going to have to move all of the spark plug wires one hole.

I am a little suprised that the timing light worked so well on the six volt tractor - I bought it to use on 12 volt systems.

I am glad to hear that another person was satisfied with his work! I have yet to use him for my old hit 'n' miss. I have recommended him to various people and they are very happy!

Doesn't the crank pulley have two marks on it? one for TDC/ 425rpm and one for fast idle(wide open, no load)?

I think the second timing mark was added when battery ignition became the standard.

Rick, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, but had to go to a funeral out of town. About 1/3 throttle brings it to 16 degrrees on both my mag fired cubs.

One problem fixed. I wonder how many more issues my tractor has .....

Before I really start to use the the tractor, I suppose I better drain and replace all fluids. (I have already changed out the engine crank case.)

Please provide me a link to find out where the drain/fill openings are, fluid types, and capacities.
