Is there such as thing as a hydraulic driven belly mower ?

Postby rick 48 cub » Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:00 pm

I am thinking of adding a belly mower to my cub. I want to be able to use the cub for mowing about 2 acres.

I thought that a hydraulic driven mower would be a lot simpler in that I would not need a long belt from the PTO.

What are the disadvantages / advantages us using the PTO belt vs. hydraulic ?

Thanks, Rick

Rick, some of the highway department mowers in use today are hydraulically driven. Hydraulic drive systems are typically noisy and require a pretty hefty hydraulic pump to drive them. I don't think the cub has the guts to drive one.

BD. is right, the Hdy. run mowers require HyFlow systems, This gives high RPM. and to add a loss of power so BD is right in saying (Need More Guts} . I would sugest a self propeld mover deck if you dont want all the pullys and you would lose the power of your tractor.

IF, I were to try this, I would use a pump that ran off the PTO with a seperate oil resevoir. The touch control pump and tank are much too small and would over heat .
That being said, the cost will get way out of hand. The others were right, buying a pull-behind mower with a seperate engine is the way to go.

Best,
Mike

The self-powered mowers I have seen (Swisher) are trailer type. They have two swivel wheels and two fixed wheels and pull with a tongue. I thought about putting one on the fast hitch so you could pick it up and down but all four wheels would have to swivel. Anybody seen one with a motor and four swivel wheels.

The ones that mount to the front of an ATV are like that.

There is a model like you say but there is another one with just 2 wheels and a tounge that you can off set left or right. I tow one behind my cub to mow a 1200 foot long Dam. So that tongue doesn't dig in I added a swivel wheelnear the end of it. The bank is too steep to ride along the face of the dam. I ride the top and with a chain set how far down the face each pass goes. I also ride along the bottom and the offset causes the mower to ride up the face. Make enough passes and it is cut. I can't ride up and down most of it because the cub skids with the rear wheels holding back going down and up is so steep that I am afraid of the nose coming over on me. I can ride down most of it with a 4 wheel JD 1050 and the differential lock set. Even then the pool at the overflow pipe causes me enough fear that I don't mess with it. When I can't get it well enough reaching down it is by foot with a string trimmer. Better safe than sorry.
When we first got the place Beverly used to ride a riding mower on the top towing a 22 inch lawn mower on a rope and I walked the bank guiding the mower. Great for strengthing your ankles if you need them strengthened.

Thanks for all of the advice.

I think I will just keep looking for a pully assembly to fit on the PTO, and a mower that will run off of the tractor.

The guy I baught the tractor from suggested that I use a mower with less than a 60 inch deck. I suppose I will look for something around a 48" with two or three blades.

What are some good sources for a good used mower and associated parts?
