Governor Rockshaft Extension Removal

Postby zim » Mon Sep 19, 2011 8:13 pm

Sorry guys, ANOTHER governor question. I really did search and read a lot before asking, so please be kind. :D

My Cub has some strange governor/throttle issues that sound like some I've read about here. When I bought it, it had a piece of screen door spring attached between the governor connecting rod clevis and grill to help pull the carb back to idle. I adjusted the clevis enough to get by without the spring, but the governor still has issues. Sometimes, the Cub throttles up to full rpm just fine, while other times it doesn't throttle up unless I idle down, then quickly push the governor lever forward. Almost as if something is slipping or not catching. The governor is responsive and sharp otherwise. Steve B straightened the top of the carb and installed a rebuild kit for me at CI Cubfest. It runs really well now!

There is definitely wear in the rockshaft extension's woodruff key, so I'd like to start with that repair. I've looked at the diagram found on the link below diagram p. 2-14(from a newer Cub Lo-Boy), but I can't figure out how to separate the rockshaft extension from the governor and spring rockshaft assembly to access the keyway. Once the keyway is repaired, I plan to adjust the governor and buy a new spring if needed.

Thanks, in advance for any help with this issue. This site has already saved me hours of troubleshooting time and I appreciate you guys.

Thanks,
zim

It just pulls out.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Zim, unbolting the holder on the left side of the front engine cover should allow you to slide it apart pretty easy.
Use JB Weld or a good epoxy glue to hold it firm.
A new governor spring is a real plus for any cub engine, faster responce and a lot more range, you'll be glad you changed it out..

Thanks Bigdog and crew. I should have tried that in the first place. The keyway itself doesn't appear to be worn, but there is definitely slop at the connection. The diagram shows the end as being smaller, but this one must have more wear at the shaft, or at the coupler. It pulled apart somewhat hard due to someone's bubblegum weld. Probably an attempt to do the same repair.

So, should I clean everything with carb or brake cleaner and try the JB Weld repair, or does it look too worn?

The JB should do it.

You fine Gents just helped me out, too. As soon as the spring comes in it'll be on to the repair.

Glad that little fix helped out Zim, will that take care of it now or do you plan to replace the spring also.

It seems really sharp and responsive, plus the throttle has a full range, So I'll probably leave it as-is for now.
