Grassboard stenciling

Postby WaMoo » Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:44 pm

At the request of Rudi, I am posting pictures of my original Cub-22 grassboard. I'm not sure what year it is, but my tractor is a 1954. The previous owner bought the 1954 tractor to replace his 1948 tractor, since he didn't like the vertical exhaust. I feel it's safe to assume it's somewhere in that timeframe. The lettering is 2" up from the bottom of the grassboard, and the large letters are 2" tall. the short letters are 1 1/2" tall, and the letters are basic block lettering. The "O" is perfectly round, and the "C's" would be round if the circle was completed.

Re: Grassboard stenciling

Postby greg49 » Fri Jan 13, 2012 5:07 pm

Thanks for posting the grassboard photos!
I am restoring two Cub 22 mowers and have a few questions for those who may be knowledgeble about them. One of my mowers has a metal grassboard with 3 rods on it .It has the IH logo stamped into it and it was red when I sandblasted it down to bare metal. Is this a "newer " version of the mower? Also, what IS the purpose and function of the grassboard? (I have never used the mower.) My last two questions are: Did all of the wood grassboards have the McCormick stenciling on them? Mine appears to be an original paint board, with the board being yellow and the metal parts including the rod painted IH blue.Lastly, where do you get the right size stencils if you wish to put the McCormick name on the board?

Any answers appreciated!

Greg, The first grassboards (pre-Cub) had a wooden stick/rod. Next was the wooden grassboard with metal rod, last was the all metal with 2-3 metal rods. The purpose in to make the cut grass fall back onto itself. This leaves a bare line that you can follow with your front tire and also prevents you from cutting grass twice (if the cut grass fell onto the uncut grass). Can't help you with the stencil questions.

Mine is no different than the rest. Russ Leggett would be the guy to ask about the stencils.

As far as the proper stencil, search the web for ones that are available. You might find one that is close, and only needs just a bit of tweaking to make it match.

Some of the earliest Cub mower grass boards may have looked something like this:

Reproduction that Phil Lenke made:

Preproduction Cub with an older version style stencil on the grassboard:

A bit closer look of the photo above:

Also note that the board also had a metal grass rod, not a wooden one.

No problem, glad I could help. C'mon down to DSCF next month and you can sit in on one of the posting seminars that Roy has scheduled. Or you might want to take a trip north to the Bash in June. I'm hoping to have some time set aside for this then too.

Got to keep up with the "jone's" here is my version. I used the measurements provided above. Thank you. Several years ago i got a binder full of a variety of stencils from Indiana State university at auction. This is one of the many versions it has. "old english". I used tung oil for the board.
