Fuel tank sealer

Postby Maritimer » Thu Mar 10, 2005 8:58 pm

Does anyone have any insight on sealing fuel tanks? I have taken them to a rad shop and had them do it but I was looking to do my next one myself. Does anyone know where and if the material can be bought by the everyday Joe?
My dad once told me if it wasn't for bad luck......I wouldn't have any luck at all......

Try a motorcycle repair shop.

Mike:

I have been trying to buy Red Kote here in the maritimes, but it seems you have to have a license to do that.

Also, POR products do not seem to be available either.

Best shot is the radiator shop. You might be able to buy the Red Kote from them. But as I have said before, it is probably just as cheap and a heck of a lot easier to let them do it.

If you have more than one tank to do, you should be able to work out some kind of discount with them as well. Also, send some business their way and it could result in cheaper costs for you :!: :D

Here's a good step-by-step write up on how to repair and seal a tank. Even though it's a VW, there's a wealth of information here and has links to POR.

and another good one:

Value-Bilt catalog has Red-Kote gas tank liner listed for $19.59 a quart. That is the product that probably most of the radiator shops use 90% of the time.
Then came Bronson

I've used both the white (PVC based?) Eastwood sealer and the POR-15 sealer. Both have done the job, but the POR product was easier to use, and with the Cub tank still attached to the hood the fewer times you have to turn it the better.

If you use the POR sealer you will need two pints - the tank baffle is just a little more surface area than one pint can cover. One other tip I would suggest is that when you have drained all the excess sealer you can (or care to wait for) from the tank, turn it upside down, i.e., cap opening down, to dry.
A kick in the pants is still a step forward.

I have a quart can of fuel tank sealer at the house I've used on a gravely tank and it worked fine. Just can't remember what its called and I'm not at the house right now. But it was easy to buy and pretty cheap too.

I got mine from JC Whitney. I think a quart was about $30.00.

Thanks guy's, It might be easier to take it to the rad shop. Its only 30-40 beans to have them do it. It will cost me 30 just for the material. Thanks for your replies.
