Cub gas tank lip re-reforming tool

Postby John Niekamp » Fri Mar 11, 2005 6:27 pm

Hi guys,

I am looking for someone who may have an OLD, JUNK, damaged, dented and/or rusted out Cub gas tank, that would be willing to sacrifice the gas cap filler neck.

I DON'T want anyone destroying a tank that could be used or repaired, not even if it might be even the slightest possibility it can be save.

What I want to do is make a re-forming tool, since I have not been able to locate one from the dealers I have called.

My plans are, is to get the neck, build the tool, make sure it's going to work, THEN anyone else here on the forum who may need to re-form their fill necks lips, would be welcomed to use it, just pay the shipping for the tool.

SO, if someone has an old tank and would be willing to part with the fill neck, let me know. I just need the neck only and not the whole tank/hood. How ever you get the neck out is up to you. Just be careful in creating any sparks, if the tank would happen to still has any remaining fumes. My hopes is that someone might have one that has been drained for several years and the fumes are long gone. Then be a less of a chance of causing a fire or explosion, if a spark was made. The cut out section does not have to look pretty, I just want an inch or so around the filler neck.

Here's a couple of suggestions to get the neck out:

A: 4 (give or take) inch hole saw with a block of wood in the fill hole, for the center point.
B: Hand or air operated sheet metal nibbler
C: some curved tin snips.

Let me know of your thoughts, is this something that others might need to borrow?

John and John. If you don't come up with one (John P.) I have the hood and tank off of the crispy cub that I can cut the neck out of. No problem

Our local Case IH dealer has one of these tools... quite interesting that they made them in the 50s/60s

i'd be interested in the gas tank reforming tool. we've got two or three farmalls here at the farm that have screwed up lips. i'd chip in for a 'community' tool, if there's enough interest.

nosih... any idea as to cost? or is this something the dealer keeps?

John and BD,

One would be great! BUT if I had a couple of them just to compare them with one another and I may also even bend one up some, to make sure I have it right before I try it on mine.

Most importantly, I don't want anyone to hurt themselves and I just don't anyone to destroy a tank, that someone who has nothing would want.

I would be willing to bet that IH had several of these die stamps, while in production. So my guess they would all be about the same for all years, may even work on several models too.

I have a general idea in my head and could probably just go off my tank, but it sure would be easier to have a sample, AND since I have never seen one, I don't want to be completely in left field.

NO, there would be no need of donating any money towards it, for I have the access to the machines, tools, material and the knowledge. If there is someone here on the forum that has other specialty type tools like this for Farmall/IH and has been loaning them out to help others here on the forum. I would be more than happy to donate this to the collection as a "community tool" that's a Good idea!

Thanks,

John

Any chance of getting some close up pictures of it, might help John in making one.

Same die would probably work on any tank the the replacement caps fit.

Nosih,

That would be great if you could and it wouldn't be much trouble for you.

Thanks, John

here are the pics. The diagram was quick, and I all the measurements are rough, and not double checked against the actual total lengths or diameters of the parts.
