Removing CaCl from rear rims

Postby jmageras » Sun Mar 20, 2005 1:18 pm

Is there a way to get CaCl out of rims without removing the tires? Thanks.

Most agricultural tire places have pumps to remove it, but I don't know what they charge. You can get a tube to fit over the valve stem, and turn the valve to the low side, remove the valve, and slip the tube over the stem and direct flow into a container. when it stops flowing, add air to raise pressure and repeat. sloe, but will work. You still need an environmentally friendly way to dispose of it, thiugh it is common to let it run out in a gravel driveway.

you are part of the problem!!!

Calcium chloride is not as toxic to the environment as most folks think. It is routinely applied to all sorts of roads around the country to melt snow and ice on paved roads as well as dust control on dirt/gravel roads.

Keep it away from fresh water ponds with slow water flow.

And, whatever you do, don't get any on your good work boots. I ruined a $100 pair of nearly new Wolverines with CaCl. They shrunk badly and got hard as a carp. It broke my heart to throw them in the wood burner. :( :( :(

I removed the calcium chloride - water solution from the tires of my 340 simply by removing the valve cores, while each tires was lying on it's side. I orientated the tire so that the valve stem was down and downhill. I had to "pump" the tire a little by putting my weight on it, but I was able to remove all of the fluid. I used surgical gloves to keep it off of my skin. Make sure you've got the orientation right when you let it fall - the filled tires are pretty hard to move once they're down. I have a gravel/dirt driveway on my farm so I didn't notice any residual discoloration. Calcium chloride is just a mineral.

Thanks, I appreciate hearing that. I should have taken "before" photos 5 years ago, but at the time I didn't think I'd ever want to remember how bad it looked. Labor of love, and all that . . . .
