Floods and Ice...

Postby allenlook » Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:00 pm

Jay's still under 6-8 inches of ice out there - I chipped away yesterday and all the rain today will help, but we got so much the creek is up OVER the bridge out back!

Sure hope the bridge is still there in the morning!

Phew!

Postby allenlook » Tue Mar 29, 2005 7:10 am

Phew, happy to say the bridge is still there... Unfortunately, much of the ice is still around the tractor, too. Seems I didn't "park him smart" last fall, and lots of snow came off the barn roof, built up around him, and then turned to ice.

But temps will be near 60 the next 3 days so I'm hoping that will do the rest of the job. I'd put down some of that new ice-melt stuff but I'm afraid it would damage the tires and eat away at the steel, so I'll just be patient.

I wonder if that stuff is as bad as regular salt...?

Allen, I think it is worse. I have a cast iron cover over a cistern that my back porch is the top of. (does that make sense?) With years of rock salt, it never rusted. I started using some of that stuff a couple of years ago and now I have rust.

Get some straight nitrogen fertilizer. just be prepared for the grass growth afterward. Another option is to send him south to Missouri where Jay won't have to endure such mistreatment. LOL

There's a nice big warm barn in central Ohio.......... Won't have to go all the way to Misery!

Hi Allen

I'm glad John got you an anser I know I would not use any kind a salt around my cub. Not just for the rusting but getting corrosion in you wiring. Even if it was tarped off I would change the trans oil, final drives and steering fluids. I had to pull out my steering shaft last weekend to pull off the front end and I cannot beleve all the gunk in it. I've blasted a can of carb clean through it and its not clean yet.

New flooids.

Postby allenlook » Tue Mar 29, 2005 8:11 pm

Well, all new "flooids" last fall, so I hope they lasted the winter! I'm down to 6" of ice around the tractor instead of 8"! Woohoo!

Might need to drain a little trans fluid off bottom to make sure there is no water in it. cubs are notorious for water accumulaitng in trannys.

Tarped

Postby allenlook » Wed Mar 30, 2005 7:03 am

Well, Sooper-Jay had his "cape" on all winter (covered head to toe with a giant tarp), so I'm sure no water got in directly - do you mean they fill with water from condensation or some other means, like brake fluid's propensity for accumulating moisture?

OK

Okey doke, I'll check them both.

Just managed to chip out the last 4" of ice over the edges of the tarp and get him uncovered enough to turn over, and damned if he didn't start up within a second!

Smelled a little like old gas, but there's only a teaspoon in the tank so I'll flush him out with a little new gas mix and break the last of the ice off the mower deck, drive him around and into the barn and get started!

Woohoo!
