What's it for?

Postby Harold R » Sun Apr 03, 2005 9:25 am

I ran across this from the engine block from a '49. The motor has been recently overhauled, so I put it in my '74, whose motor had blow-by really bad, stuck valve, and just general malaise. Anybody have an idea what this pipe plug is there for?

I just checked mine, I don't have a plug but there is a detent in the casting in that same location and seems to be the same size as the plug in your pic.

I checked all 3 Cubs - none of them have a pipe plug there or any obvious sign of one. The 1948 doesn't even have that angled 'brace' cast between the filter canister and the block where your pipe plug is. The contour between the canister and the block is uniform. But the 1952 and 1962 have the brace.

Only the 1962 has the round plug cast on the bottom of the filter canister that might interfere with a 12V starter.

That plug got discussed to no conclusion back when NOSIH had the NOS engine blocks, as they had the plug. My guess is it was used in some non-tractor power unit installation.

Carl, that's the mold mark that's giving me trouble. Mine is a good 1/8 inch thick. The grinding wheel will take care of it, I just hate grinding to make something fit.

HR, one possiblility is that it is so you could tap into the oil pressure and used it to lube something else??

I would have to look at the lube chart in the manual to see if there is pressure on the top of the filter.

Since the oil pressure gauge comes off the top, there would be pressure at the top.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Unscrew it and see what is inside. I was thinking it might go into the water jacket.

I'll take it out tomorrow, since I don't have any fluids in the engine.

I agree with Jim...that the mystery plug is an additional drain to the water jacket  .

I tried for about a 1/2 hour to get that plug loose. It's in a corner such that I couldn't get a pipe wrench on it. I did however get an end wrench on it, but pulling hard, plus a couple of good wraps with a hammer yeilded nothing. I decided to let a sleeping dog lay. I too agree it goes into the water jacket. Probably rusted in place. If it were oil behind it, probably would have come loose.
