Oil going up

Postby moe1942 » Fri Apr 08, 2005 7:52 am

My crankcase oil is increasing and TC fluid is going down so I know what the problem is. I have used the search function but don't find the answer to the following question.

Are the gaskets and seals the same for all cubs or were there changes in later years?

thanks

The earliest pumps used a shaft seal. Later ones used an o-ring. The other gaskets and seals remained the same.

Thanks for the reply Jim. Was beginning to think I was invisible. :)

Guess I'll wait until I pull the puimp to see which one I have, unless you know which was used on the 69.

Thanks again..

Like Donny said, a '69 should have an o-ring. You can make sure you have the original type without removing it. Look for a part number stamped into the pump housing. If it is 352035R91, it has the seal. R9<anything else> will be the o-ring.

Who knows why that sort of thing might happen. Rebuilders frequently do things to obliterate original markings of units. If you can't tell what something was, you aren't going to be able to question whether it is the correct part or not. Sames them the touble of doing things right.

If you take an R4 pump in for a rebuild and get back an R2 pump you might complain. If you get back a P-15A and his book says P-15A replaces an R4 what can you say?

Thanks for the info.

Was really hoping it had a seal in case the shaft is buggered.

Any fixes or advice in case the shaft is worn??

Thanks to all who replied.

Cubguy47, I have a lathe. Is that what you used to dress up the shaft? Was the shaft hardened and if so did you use a carbide tool or toolpost grinder?

Also, has anyone used a seal in place of the O-ring. I have a milling machine and it would be easy to enlarge the pump cover to accept a seal.

Any advice on doing that would be helpful.
