Circle of Safety-Finally

Postby tinnerjohn » Thu Jul 26, 2012 7:15 pm

I just passed the test. I tried it a couple months ago and kept missing two or three. Tonight its raining, Mama's not home and I decided I'll sit here all night if I have to. (It was a pride thing. I"ve been operating tractors and machinery all my life, from Cubs to 200 plus HP Deeres, plus sat through the Tractor Safety Course with both sons, so I was feeling kind of stupid.) Anyway, I passed and I would highly recommend the test and especially perusing the linked material, especially to new owner/operators. Now I can't wait to see that little circle by my name :) John

Circle of Safety Test and Profile Badge

This is a really good test to ensure you have the knowledge to operate your Cub safely and avoid serious accidents/injury.

Congrats :applause: on passing. Well done :!:

On re-test 30 out of 30 :{_}:

We had a near tragedy at work years back,

company owner a very senior guy that really knew is stuff had a lapse of safety, he was power washing a JD back hoe in front of the shop, bucket up when he decided to reach in and start the tractor up, bad idea tractor was in gear and fired up, the bucket hit the eve of the shop roof and lifted it clean off the building and then the JD started to climb the wall  only thing that stopped the tractor was the back hoe dug in the the ground, the owner was darn lucky he almost got ran over by the rear wheel when it fired up.

I tried last night and got 29/30. I'll study some more and try again tonight. Definetely good information in the reading material. There are many examples of bad habits that have had extreme consequences.
Great public service!

I had wondered what the circle of safety was too, I went to the link and took the test and failed. Got 28 out of 30. Here is a blood curdling true story. A guy I work with last year was brush hogging his upper field with his clapped out 9n. Like most of those n’s the axle seals leak oil all over the band brakes and they are pretty much non-functional. The field is on his property up a small dirt trail uphill from his house/ garage. He got done and turned to go down the dirt trail from his upper pasture to his house for lunch. As he pulled out of the field the tractor popped out of gear and started to run away. As the tractor quickly gathered speed he decided to abandon ship. He started to stand up on the seat to jump over the tire and off. Just as he did the fast moving tractor hit a bump and knocked him off the back. He found himself somehow under the spinning PTO shaft lying on the running brush hog deck holing on to the 3 point draft arm with his arm. He was trying to figure what to do at this point. If he fell down he would go under the brush hog deck. If he went to the side the tires are spinning by his head. This all probably took place in the span of a few seconds. So he started to pull himself up around the draft arm and that was when the tractor hit a tree going about 25 mph. he was thrown forward into the rear end of the tractor breaking a few ribs his collar bone and dislocating his shoulder. He is lucky to be alive. Think about that before driving an old tractor with crappy brakes.

Ricky, you are #235.

There are now 239 members of the Cub Circle of Safety! Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to complete and pass the test. To those that have taken the test and not passed, yet, don't give up. Safety is extremely important and with vintage and antique tractors, it is paramount. As fun as they are, they can turn on us and surprise us quickly if we are not careful, as many of you have shared personal stories of tragic and near tragic events.

Thank You,
Dennis
