Most people don't use any sealant, but I like to use a thin layer of silicone gasket compond on it, sometiems they are hard to sela, especially if the casting is bolwed a little from having been frozen. A homemade gasket for cap is ok, if you buy one get a non pressuerized one or at most a 3 pound one.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

 Just noticed it yesterday. But on the radiator cap the distance between the seal on the cap and the seal at the end is longer than a standard cap. So the cap sealed but the seal in the radiator never touched the bottom seal area. No wonder every time I got on the side of a hill antifreeze ran out the overflow tube. Got a new one from my IH dealer today for $12.50
