12 volt coil on a 6Volt magneto system?

Postby countryguy » Tue Nov 27, 2012 10:14 pm

I recently inherited a cub that has a 12 volt coil on it and a resistor in line with it. Will that work correctly?

Yes, it will. That is normal hook up for a coil on 6 volt system. Out of curiosity, is it a magneto or distributor?

It is a magneto. Do I use a 6 or twelve volt battery?

That set-up will require a 12v battery, but you should look things over to see if the tractor has been converted to 12v or just the ignition system.

I mistyped above, I meant to say that is a normal setup for a coil on a 12 volt system. On a 6 volt system the resistor would be left out. As Gary pointed out, does it have a 12 volt generator on it, or an alternator, or is the generator still 6 volt? If you are not familiar with the setups, a magneto did not originally have an external coil requiring power from the tractor. It's coil was internal, but conversions using external coils are common due to the expense and relatively short life of the older magneto coils.

It looks like a generator but I do not know whether it is 6 or 12 volts. Most likely it is still 6 volts. Is it easy to identify if it has been changed over to 12 volts?

Red Delco identification tag on generator side - 12 volts. Black identification tag, 6 volts.

Voltage of battery installed when purchased?
I have an excuse. CRS.

It did not have a battery in it when I got it.

Well then, check the identification tag on the side of your generator.

I found a wiring diagram of a cub tractor and the tractor is definately wired positive ground. The tag on the generator doesn't have any color on it but the generator has oil cups on it for lubrication which leads me to beleive it is a 6 volt generator. I also found a picture of a 6 volt generator on a website and it was identical to mine.

It's probably a 6 volt coil with inline resistor. This would mean that the battery - electrical system is 12 volt.

If the 12 volt coil with inline resistor were powered by 6 volt battery/electrical system - primary coil winding voltage would more than likely be on the absolute minimal side to fire the spark plugs.

Presence of oil cups and comparing a picture of a generator on the internet does not mean that it's 6 volts. 6 and 12 volt generators are almost identical in size and appearance.

If the tag is still present and the color gone - you can look the generator part number, from the tag, on line or in the service manual to determine the generator's voltage and amperage.

It is a Delco Remy 1101355 generator. From a post I read I beleive it to be a 6 volt generator, correct???

From the TC-37C Parts Catalog (08-29-52) - Electrical

Image

IH Part # 45 634 D with Delco # 1101355 with Delco # 1116766 Relay (Cut-Out) is indeed 6 volts
