Continental Belton KA-5 MOW-R Rebuid

Postby CPIII » Mon Aug 27, 2012 10:40 am

Well I am starting to go through the mower I bought from DGrapes. It is in pretty good shape as it is but I want to use it as my winter project and rebuild it. It is a huge mower (60") ......I don't think the cub will have much problem powering it.....but that remains to be seen. Below are a couple of pictures of the starting condition of the mower.

I set my 6ft level on top to give a bit of scale to the picture.

More pictures to follow. Pulling apart the spindles tonight and going to see if everything looks ok there....

Installed this same mower deck on my 52' cub 38 yrs. ago [my mower deck is dark green]. It has been used very hard, including clearing out small brush and tree growth as well as using as a " finish " mower around barnyard and house. . I just changed the mower belt this year after 38 yrs! Installed new blades after 30 yrs. Could'nt imagine a mower any better and yet no one ever mentions this brand.

Glad to hear someone else is using this mower...........which gear box do you use? Is it a right angle drive or is it one from Continental Belton? If it is the CB gear box I am interested to know what the gear ratio is....is there any way that you could check yours? I would also love to see pictures of your mower ....as I don't think the original color was yellow.

Noticed one on ebay, looks like it has some of the original guards and maybe some original paint. They are a little different.

Great stuff.......I actually remember that post from when I was trying to find out what type of mower i had originally. I notice that on the tractors with a 540 RPM PTO they all use the Continental Belton Gear box which by looking at the parts list is actually a speed increaser not a reducer. All the one that I see that are run on Cubs have used a IH right angle drive (1:1). So it looks like I am on the right track here.

I really regret giving away the original mower that came with my cub.......I could have used some of the parts for this one........DUH!!!!!

Yea, that's ashamed. Especially now that you have come across two of them. Most folks here have never seen them at all. Maybe you should be playing the lottery too!!!

Tell you what, that looks like a sturdy built mower deck. Most companies use pulleys to speed up the blades, so you may be correct and it's running 1:1 on a Cub. The Woods 42" mowers basically run 1:1 on Cubs too. The Woods 59" mowers have smaller deck pulleys than the PTO pulley, which speeds up the blades. If it were me, I think I'd look for a standard Woods PTO pulley for a Cub, and try to run the belt like the Woods setup is, with two pulleys between the final drives that make the turn from vertical to horizontal. The only catch would be if the mower needs to turn the opposite direction.

This mower doesn't use a belt that changes orientation it has a drive shaft from the right angle drive to a flywheel on the mower deck that turns the belt.....

I'm not sure I would like that contraption mounted on my drawbar. It looks too low to the ground.

Well getting the spindle apart was a breeze and everything looks good....to me anyway. See pictures below.
Think I need new blades:
Small Blades.jpg

Pulley comes apart in multiple pieces....very easy to remove.

Threads and spindle seem to be in good shape.

Need to get new seals and bearings....and actually AG-Mier still has a lot of parts available for this mower.

Well I found all the parts that I need.......but the prices from Brookside Equipment (Locar dealer I had to use to buy from AG - Meier) were just the other side of phenominal!
Cone bearing (Taper Roller Bearing) - 42.55
Race - 27.94
$70.49 for a single bearing!!!!! :big what:

But I was able to get part numbers off of the bearings I removed and found them for $16.30 for the set!!!! :D
The Timken part numbers are - race is a 15250 ......the roller bearing (cone bearing) is a 15126.
http://bearingsdirect.com/store/index.p ... ail&p=4401 ....they seem to have a great selection and resonable prices.

The blades however I don't have a choice of supplier....they are $22.75 a piece....so not too bad.

Next I have to find the oil seals......

Timken has a really good seal catalog on line too. You can cross reference directly from OD, ID and thickness to a National number.

Then run to the Rockauto catalog or Summit Racing or the guy you got your prices from (they were pretty competitive)....you should be able to do seals for $4-5 each....

I managed to get the # off of the oil seals last night. They are Victor # 64433 which crosses to a Timken 473228. I was able to find them for $4.30 the price from the local suppiler wa just under $20 :big what:
