Noise in engine

Postby RAW in IA » Sat Apr 16, 2005 11:59 am

I have a 53 Cub and it has a knocking noise in the engine under full throttle and fairly light load. I hear it mostly when on the road in high gear going uphill. If I put a load on it it goes away. I no it is not in the transmission (1st/reverse idler does rattle some) but sounds like it is coming from the engine. I am using Syntec blend 10W30 oil and it holds about 30-35 lbs. pressure at full throttle, and about 10 at idle. Any ideas? Thanks, Roger

You know, I hadn't really thought about it , but I think that is the case.

You are biginning to describe what I suspect to be a bod rod bearing or worn wrist (piston) pin.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Ditto John, sounds like a wrist pin to me.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

My wife says I don't listen to her. - - - - - - - - Or something like that!

Engine Knocks

Postby Eugene » Sat Apr 16, 2005 9:46 pm

The knock is probably mechanical, since it disappears under heavy load.

There are a couple of other possibilities that will cause a ping/knock. Engine timing off a bit. Weak spark (spark plug/s). Carbon deposits. And on the outside, wrong air fuel mixture. Usually any problems on this list will get worse under load.

Suggest you do a tune up and try some solvent in the fuel system to remove carbon deposits. If that does not solve the problem, tear down time.

Sorry, BOL.

Thanks for the info, guys. I was affraid of that. I don't use it a lot, mostly fool around in the summer and plow snow in the winter. I'll have to see if I can round up the money to rebuild it.
