Great pics as always, Larry. If you're coming into Newport on the Pell bridge, I'm assuming the fort is across the water to your right? I was doing a delivery down there just yesterday.

Almost Jeff..... The fort is what you see from the bridge, the advance redoubt is a quarter mile or so beyond the fort.

Give me a yell if you ever have a couple of hours. Always glad to give a Cub guy (or 'retired' Cub guy) a look at the fort. It's pretty impressive.

The grass sure did great. Was that end of August, you scruffed it up and broadcast seed? Maybe some could benefit from a desription of how it was done? I do know late August is the best time to establish grass, around here.

Oh the goats would do great, they'd especially like the poison ivy and the brushy stuff. And the place is well fenced in, plus lots places to climb (they love to climb) and lots of places to get out of the rain and snow (they don't like rain and snow).

I sure would love to have some goats for doing the walls, trouble is.... nowhere to hide from the weather and there is a pretty good drop if they get too close to the edge. Seems there was an 'incident' with tethered goats a few years back.



As for what we did, pretty simple; mow it, chop it, rake it, rake it again (only what I could get at with the Cub), hand spread the seed (shade blend with ingredients like Boss Hog recommended ) and throw some hay (left over from the Folk Festival). It was seeded September 1st and we luckily got some nice rain a couple of days later. The rake was probably optional, but it did a great job of pulling up small stumps and sticks, not to mention 'rough up' the soil. It is really well established now.

That's one of the tenaille's and curtains at the fort. Easiest way I could show what a goat had for a vertical challenge on the 'superior slopes'.

The whole place amazes me, the ability to shed (and store) rain, how perfectly straight everything is, how well it has survived the elements and yet have so few things out of place. Essentially the top of every structure in the outer works is earth with a steep angle on the edge. Earth was used for the shock absorption from incoming artillery, it's also a convenient material to work with. But tough to keep the weeds down. The top level of the Redoubt is also earth, as are all the walls. All the interior structures of the fort and redoubt are made of brick arches. I mean all, there are places in the Redoubt where there are 5 arches coming together. Guess I better snag a photo, seems I don't have one. I would put the long ignored Advance Redoubt against most any whole fort I have ever seen (except Ft Adams), it is simply magnificent.

Not many places you can find a double helix granite stairway, looks like they ripped out the top ones on one side to get something up top. The turf is doing well there now too.

Boss, I hope that the "Commander in chief" lets you come north to see it, it is really amazing! Ed
