My 52 cub has always been hooked 'pos to' pos and negative to ground. batteries have lasted from 2 to 5 yrs. Is there a way to test to see correct hookup and how many years of battery use do other owners get ?

2 to 5 years is in the normal range for a battery. 5 year service life would be better.

6 volt system should be hooked up with a positive ground. But, you can leave the system hooked up with a negative ground, or polarize the regulator when you install the battery with a positive ground.

Eugene, I know what you mean and most people reading this know what you mean, but for clarity and passing on correct information, shouldn't that be something like....
"But, you can leave the system hooked up with a negative ground, or polarize the generator, easiest by using the wiring connections located on the regulator when you install the battery with a positive ground."

Plus as an additional step don't you need to check how the distributor is wired (if it has one) when changing from positive to negative or negative to positive ground?

You should wire the ignition coil to match the battery grounding, primarily on the systems where the coil secondary is grounded to the coil's metal case. Reality is that if the coil is wired backwards, you normally don't notice a significant lack of engine performance.

they still sell pos ground regulators , maybe that is some of the reason all yawl 6 volt folks have charging problems

Use of a battery maintainer (not a charger) will greatly increase the life of any battery.

I have to have a battery maintainer on my 12 volt batteries too When it is -30F/C it doesn't matter if it is 6, 12 or 24 volt - it usually needs help.

I use replacement cut-outs/regulators supplied by my local AC Delco Service Center. Generator and Cut-Out

For a little more money, you can get an electronic 'smart' charger. It should work for a battery maintainer well, it will cycle as needed.
