Should drive gear shaft be smooth?

Postby Cubota » Tue Sep 25, 2012 1:26 pm

The drive gear on the touch control has a couple of grooves on the shaft where it rides on the o-ring. Is this normal or are they wear marks?

Thanks,
Fred

It should be smooth with no grooves. I don't know if it is "too worn" or not, but I'm sure one of the gurus will be along to clarify that!

That would go to my son Tim for scrap if it were mine, but I may be more picky than some. And have a good supply of parts.

If you can feel the groove , I would replace it. It may work but would most likely leak much sooner than a non grooved shaft.Parts are fairly easy to come by and I imagine Boss can fix you up as well. :D

I consider myself to be somewhat fussy, but with a fresh o'ring and a dab of grease, I would think you'll be fine. About 95%+ of 40-50 year old pumps will have some signs of a wear groove, and yours doesn't look that severe to me unless the picture isn't showing up clear enough.

I lean that way as well. Trying a new o-ring is cheap and the work to change one is pretty small. A new (and still soft) o-ring may very well work with a slightly grooved shaft.

I have found a Dremel and one of these is real good for smoothing the shaft. It will allow you to use one that is beyond what most people throw away.

Crocus cloth and patience are both friends on things like this. If you can catch your fingernail in the groove, you have too much groove and need to polish it out.

Thanks to all for the advise. I was pretty sure the grooves were not suppose to be there, but was hoping otherwise. I had replaced the o-rings a while back and it did not leak for a couple of months. However, I checked the oil the other day and noticed it was a little high, so I checked the TC fluid and to no surprise it was a little low. I tore the pump apart and noticed the grooves that I had not noticed the first time I had it apart. The grooves seem pretty deep to me, so I think I will replace it since Burghs is close to me. I would try the other fixes, but messing with the fluids is no fun.

Thanks again,
Fred

Just make sure that when you buy a pump from Burgh's that you can open it up quick and look at the shaft to make sure that you are not buying a replacement that also has the grooves in the shaft...

I wonder if a speedi-sleeve would work here. I know they are made to used with a seal and not an o-ring. What do you think?

I was thinking about that, too, Bob... Do they make a speedy sleeve that would fit? Would it be cost effective?

I actually wonder whether grooves like Fred's are part of the cause of the leakage that we see on other peoples' cubs...

Mike, I just sent an email to SKF asking whether a sleeve will work with an o-ring. Hopefully I'll have a positive answer tomorrow.

I think the shaft would need to be turned down for a sleeve, there is not enough room for a sleeve in the hole, and still have room for o-ring.
