Making a Sediment Bowl Gasket???

Postby GWrider1957 » Tue Sep 25, 2012 8:11 pm

Anyone had any luck making a sediment bowl gasket? I cleaned my Sediment Bowl and now won't go back together without leaking. Old gasket seems good but apparently not. I've check with all the tractor parts places here but no luck and don't have time to order one before Cubruma. I'd sure hate to not bring my 55 lo-boy because of a $1.00 gasket.
If there is a wrong way to do it, I'll find it.

Have you tried Tractor Supply or NAPA? I have had luck with theirs.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I have tried to make sediment bowl gaskets out of almost every material under the sun - paper, plastic, inner tube rubber, magazine covers, tool box drawer liners - all with no success.

I have had great success cutting them out of a roll of cork. If you have the old gasket simply trace around the outer and inner edges and cut with scissors. If you don't have the old gasket trace around the glass bowl and guesstimate or find a suitable item like a shot glass for the inner edge.

I was at Tractor Supply the other day and noticed a roll of cork for only nine bucks. Wow. Wasn't it only a couple of bucks the last roll I bought?

If you can't find a roll of cork try scavenging some from a pin up board or an old gas can cap or spout.

My Tractor Supply carries a screen and gasket package...It is not labeled for Cubs...but it fits and works perfectly.

You should be able to get the gasket from about every tractor dealer. That type filter is very common. I got one from a JD dealer.

Rubberized cork gasket material works well for that. However, as others have stated, they are easy enough to find that I wouldn't mess with trying to make one.

Also, I have to ask, are you tightening the nut on the bottom of the bowl upon installation?

I installed an new fuel strainer purchased from Tractor Supply. Upon attaching to the gas tank I did tighten the bottom nut however, after starting and running I noticed fuel leaking on the bell housing.
