Trailer for hauling Cub

Postby kjoiner » Fri Sep 28, 2012 5:11 pm

Hello,

It's been a couple of years since I posted on the forum. My last one was regarding magneto timing back in 2009. I haven't had time to work on the Cub for a couple of years and sadly my Dad passed away in February so now I'm planning to haul it back to my house and try to get it running again. I've been looking at renting a trailer to pull it home. I have a small 5 x 8 garden trailer but it's way too small to haul the tractor. Has anyone rented a trailer from places like Sunbelt (at Lowes)? I figure I need one with a wood floor and capacity of around 3500lbs. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks,

Kyle

U haul has a smaller trailer 5x9 utility with ramp. Make sure you get the ramp option. Perfect for just a tractor. If you need space for more stuff, go with the 6x12 with ramp. I've used both and they work great.

Peter Person used to rent one from U Haul, before he bought one. Seemed pretty rugged. Ed

I used a U-haul once and it worked great. Cheap, too.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I took a look at the U Haul trailers and they do look like a good deal. I'll probably go with the 6 x 12 with ramp since the 5 x 9 has a weight limit of around 1,660lbs and the 6 x 12 has a limit of 2,600lb. I don't have the wheel weights installed and may carry them later. How much does a belly mower weigh?

I've used the 6x12 for a cub and a ton of other stuff. Since it has surge brakes, it was not a problem.

They build or have built the trailers to their own design.

Hello,

Thanks for all the advice. I rented a 6 x 12 trailer from U Haul and got the Cub back to my house safely. The only issue I ran into was having to flip the rear wheels around. They were oriented so their width was an inch or two wider than the opening for the ramp so I reversed them and narrowed it up a couple of inches then used a Come Along to pull it up onto the trailer.

I'll post a picture or two when I get a chance. Next up will be trying to start it up. I may have to revisit the timing issue I posted about a year or two ago.

Thanks again!

Kyle

Interesting that you mentioned having to switch the wheels around to fit it through the ramp gate on the 6x12. It seems that U-haul has changed their trailer style from a standard 6x12 with regular tailgate to a trailer with a ramp-gate. The ramp is nowhere near as wide as the trailer and really limits what you can put on it! When I went to meet the hauler who was bringing Lewis from Oregon to Minnesota, I used the 6x12 with the ramp gate. Lewis had the speed reducer on his final and was a little wide... I think I took a coat of rust/paint off of his wheel weights getting him through that gate.

Just something to be aware of for those looking to use those trailers with the ramp...I fear that any implements that stick out past the wheels will not allow the tractor to fit on the trailer...
