1953 Cub decal question

Postby Judgeguy » Tue Oct 02, 2012 3:18 am

I'm restoring a 1953 Cub and have all the appropriate decals except one. It is the one that goes on the front of the battery box, and is visible in a color photo on page 50 of the book Farmall Letter Series Tractors by Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar. It is also in a picture in my owner's manual that came with the tractor when new. I've contacted all of the decal vendors on the internet without success in finding it. If I can get a clear picture of it to see the wording, color, and size I can have one specially made, but the pictures in the two books are too faint and blurry to read the decal. I'm hoping someone can help me find the decal or email me a photo of one. Thanks! judgeguy08@yahoo.com

Judgeguy,

I am not familiar with that decal as I don't think my "before" and "after" dates ('51 FCub & '55 LoBoy) had it. By "all the decal vendors" did that include TM Tractor (site sponsor)? If not I would give Tom a call, he is pretty versed on what belongs where.

Good luck, and how about a picture or two of the finished product?

Yes, I got decals from TM Tractor, but they didn't have the one in question. The only references I've been able to find anywhere for it are the two photos I mentioned. I'll post pictures when it's finished. Thanks! Bob

Hummm.... I will have to look at the reference noted tonight (Farmall Letter Series Tractors by Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar).

Think I will call that a "Dealer Decal" until someone solves the mystery!

If I recall, when doing my '55 LoBoy, the only question seemed to be the patent date sticker on the fender... or was that the '51 FCub  But I was going by what TM had and recommended, was not going for 100% accuracy.

I am sure someone far more knowledgeable will chime in,
David

I have a decal in that location on my all original '48 Cub with magneto ignition and the Starting and Lighting package installed.

I have a yellow sticker in the same place on my '59 Lo-Boy. I don't remember what it says, (don't have the battery box front installed because I don't have a top), but I do recall it is yellow.

My '48 has the style shown in the "Farmall Letter Series" photos. It's in rough condition, but the content seems to mirror Mr. Clayton's, just a different shape (shorter, wider).

Numerous photos that show both decal styles can be seen in the "Farmall Cub Photo Archive", Iconographic series. But, they are all black and white (except the cover) and taken at such distance that all are un-readable.

Your pics and info have been most helpful. The one picture is clear enough that I can have a decal made from it. Can either of you give me the size of the decals on your tractors? The wording looks to be the same, and I think the shorter and wider one would be closer to the photos in the books. Thanks! Very much appreciated! Bob

I think that Tim aka tst can do up those decals as long as he can get sizes. I know I would like some.

The picture in your manual is much older than your tractor. The narrower, taller one is probably more like your tractor had in the first place.

You're welcome for the photo, I just wish the decal was more legible. Judgeguy, the decal is 1 3/4" by 4 1/2". I'll spend some time in the daylight this afternoon making sure the wording is the same.

Edit -- Both decals read the same. Curious about the different sizes...
