Ain't grease wonderful

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Tue Apr 19, 2005 9:57 pm

been waiting for ground to dry to plow neighbors gardens. Finally got dry enough, but disk plow is in Pieces still, so I dug the old molboard plow out from under the pile of old attachments. been using the disk plow, and the molboard has been setting for 6 or 7 years most of them outside. However, being an old hillbilly I always got a hand full of grease nad coated it good when I finished the seasons plowing. All it took was a quick once over with a wire wheel, and I was in business.

I brush mine off with a wire brush after my plowing is completed and spray paint it . Works good after one pass on the field in the spring.

Paint might work good in some soils, especially if they were sandy, but the clay we have here will just stick to a painted share, and not slide enough to scour it.

I plowed my garden yesterday. I use grease to keep the plow from rusting. But I didn't wipe the grease from the moldboard before I started. All I know is that it was shiny when I finished 8) I hope I'm not able to taste it when I grow my vegetables!!! I have all clay ground, but it was plenty dry enough when I plowed.

I've found paint to be the best for long term protection. I buy the .99 cent stuff in black, wash the plow when I'm done and shoot it with the black spray. After the first or second pass the next season its rubbed off.

I use spray wax. Seems to be adequate.
