Previous owners can do some wild things. PO of my sickle mower had a stack of several washers on that shaft. Perhaps not quite as thick as a pulley, but pretty close. Without pics, it's a shot in the dark on figuring out his problem. I agree that most likely something else is off kilter.

Thanks Thomas. I wish I could post a few pictures. I think I have the wrong PTO pulley on the cub because it is flush with the end of the shaft. I have seen some pulleys that extend further because the portion that fits onto the splines extend further behind the pulley.

There's the description we needed! Yep you are right. Those pulleys can be kind of pricey.

Pat sent me a pic of his pulley set up. It wasn't hard to see what the problem is. The pulley on the PTO is for a belly mower, not a sickle mower.



The correct pulley should be a 4" or 4 1/2" pulley to operate correctly and at the right speed. Below is the correct configuration.

Well, I think that the problem has been identified. I talked to Mike at Columbia Tractor in N.Y. state and he is sending the correct pulley and the part that I need to keep the sickle blade from falling when putting it in the travel mode. He really knows his stuff. I hope this takes care of the problem so I can cut around my ponds.

I'm still learning how to use everything this forum provides. I know there is a way to formally send a "Thank You" but since I haven't figured it out yet. So, I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me figure out these two problems. I guess if I had been really alert/smart, I would have seen the difference in my PTO pulley and the one in the picture in my manual. Oh Well. Again, Thanks to all of you and I'm sure this will not be the final thank you because there will always be more problems. This is a great forum.

Just a follow up to my sickle mower escapade. I cover a few updates and a question as follows:

1. I called Mike at Columbia Tractor and he was as good as was mentioned. I bought the correct pulley and the piece that keeps the blade from falling when put in the traveling position. The pulleys lined up correctly and everything was good until I tried cutting. The guard that protects the wooden drive shaft was pushed up and the flange at the end of the wooden shaft that attaches to the drive shaft hit it a couple of time before I could disengage the PTO. The flange broke. So, I order a new one.

2. I think the blades need replacing. Is is better to buy a new complete bar with the blades or to just replace the blades?

3. I really appreciate all of the help that all of you have provided. This is best forum of all the forums that I am a member.

4. Mays Thomas/Thomas Mays provided me with the name of a man near us that paints Cubs. So, after I get the sickle mower back in operation, I will probably get it painted.

5. One day soon, I will post a little history of my Dad's little cub tractor.
