what am I doing wrong?

Postby gcbailey » Sat Oct 13, 2012 5:40 pm

OK.... I'm in the final stages of getting the Cub together and I've hit a little snag. I know this is probably real simple... How do you get the grille on? It's like it's about 1/2 too short if I get one side on, the other is just too short... I am making sure the tab is going in, any hints...???

Has this grille ever been on this tractor? Try removing all 4 of the screws. Push the grille into place and then replace the screws.

You may have to bend it some, keep the doglegs loose, they should slide a little, until you get the grill on. a second pair of hands helps too.

No... it is a brand new grille from TM that I painted, It is identical to the original, which won't go back on either... I know it can't be so, but it's like the front bolster is too wide holding it out at the bottom.... I'll try to get some pics.

The doglegs are new too (tm also), if that matters...

Is there any way I could have the hood skewed, and the front bolts still go in the radiator supports?

There is a trick to it.

I remove the bottom screws in both doglegs. Remove the rear screw in the top of the dog leg and loosen the front one.

I Barely attach the grill to the left dogleg, while facing the tractor(no reason, just works for me)

Then, press in on the grill and fasten the right side as well as possible.

Reinstall the screws you took out(starting them all before you tighten any)

Try to get a better bite on the side of the grill you fastened first.

tighten everything up

Someone helping that, is helpful,(not everyone that helps is helpful  ) is a definite plus.

I am following this thread with interest, because I have exactly the same problem with my Cub radiator grill, except that it is the same one which came off the tractor when I started working on it.

When I got mine last year it came with the original grille, but not on the tractor. I tried fitting it last year, but the old grille has apparently been bent in half at sometime during it's life and didn't fit right, so I didn't think anymore about it.

Like I said, the grille is new, doglegs new, hood original... I'll get some more pics after church this morning.

One other thing... how long should the bolts be? I picked up 1/4x1/2.... could it be the bolts are too short, or should there be a washer too?

That is the correct bolt size. No washers required. They should be truss bolts. Yours look a bit different.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

1/2" should be long enough. They are pan head truss, with about a 1/2" diameter head, I believe.

I know mine are different than the original.... all TSC had, and Lowe's didn't have any either. I may have to order some from McMaster Carr.... What I have is a "flat bottom" bolt, no bevel, but I didn't know how much smaller the head was than the factory.

OK, here are some more pics.... I don't see any welds, but I could be mistaken... The only thing that I see, which you can tell in the top view pics, is it looks like it's not centered on the radiator and air cleaner pipe.
