I opened up the shifter cover today to look around. Cleaned the oil holes (front one appeared to be blocked) I noticed that going downhill, there is no noise at all. As soon as the tractor starts to "pull" there is a terrible whine. It seems to be the same way in all gears. I have read alot on here, but I am not well versed on these trannys. I know straight cut gears will have some whine, but not this much. I flushed it and filled it last year, and other than some crud in the flow channels going to the front and rear oil holes (which I cleaned out) everything looks good, clean, and without corrosion. Any thoughts?

I have had reverse idler gears cause those symptoms before. I have also had what I initially thought was gear noise but found out it was loose lug bolts on the wheel and/or the wheel center mounting bolts to the rim were loose, just something else to consider.
Update. It is much more noticeable in 2nd gear than any other. All other gears whine about the same amount...not that loud. 2nd is LOUD.
This is probably your 2nd gear noise....
I tore down my parts tractor transmission due to an ungodly howl from it in first and reverse. Second wasn't as bad - maybe it didn't seen that bad because first was SO bad. That particular transmission had failed 1/R slider and the 2nd gear on the 2/3 slider to go along with bearings getting close to end of life - the front ball bearings were pitted and the diff preload was gone. Tractor had been rode hard in its life. It's now doing rehab mowing the yard.
I certainly have to remove the shifter cover again and look more closely. Funny thing is, I seldomly use 2nd gear. I plow and cultivate in 1st, and if I am moving around I use third. I even pull the hayride in first (lots of kids aboard). Thanks for the picture, now I know what I am looking for, and where the wear locations are likely on the gears.
I also have an example of one with the splines wallowed out....that will cause it too....
