Betsy's Shifter

Postby larryfoster » Sat Oct 20, 2012 9:45 am

I just realized that I haven't been here in a while.
I apologize.
Life sometimes just eats all your time. (Or jobs)
Betsy has been doing an admirable job and I can't begin to express how grateful I am to all the help I've gotten here.

Betsy has started to get a little bit cantankerous on one thing- her shifter.
I replaced the original a while back when the lever snapped. I did get it repaired for a spare which later snapped off at the pin.
Anyhow, there seems to be a lot of slop in the shifter and occasionally it will stick in the gear it is in.
It seems to come out of the forks.
So far, I have been able to take the shifter housing off and put it in place but it still seems to have a lot of play.

I found a new shifter at Joes Farmall Parts for $75 and bought it
http://joesfarmallparts.com.flax.arvixe.com/store/index.php?_a=product&product_id=417
There was no picture and when it came, it was only the lever (#7 in the pic below)

It seemed that $75 ($100 with shipping and tax) was a little steep for just a lever and wanted to ask your opinion.
If not, then I was wondering if this may be the source of my problem.

On the old shifter, there was a pin that holds the spring and some kind of retainer clip but no pin hole on the new one.
Also on the old one, I can't seem to find the retainer clips or something they call a "lever guide" (part G on the left image)

The forks don't visually seem to be worn and they seem to be tight on the rail it rides on.
Occasionally, it's kind of hard to shft and I have to bang it with the heel of my hand.

I mostly use 1st and reverse and sometimes 2nd gear.
Unrelated (I think) to this.
On the rare times I'm in 3rd, it whines pretty good.
Is this a sign of trouble down the road?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Larry

Hi Larry!

I'm a little closer to you now as I am no longer "WisconsinCubMan" and am now just Hengy. I live in Gibsonia, PA, just down the road!

As to your shifter, look at the forks underneath and make sure that they are good and tight on the shift rails and make sure that the openings in the forks line up correctly. I really think that the problem is not in your shifter and is more in the rail and forks...

I also have another shifter for you if it turns out to be the shifter... We should get together sometime!

Mike, welcome home!!!
Would love to get together.
Since I've been absent, I wouldn't have picked up the change including the new handle.

I may not know what I'm looking at but the forks seem tight and solid without wear.
I'm on a mission today to find my (temporarily, I hope) misplaced other shifter.

I about fell over when I received my shifter from Joes and found that it was only the lever for $75.
I may take you up on your spare

Larry, $75 seems awful high to me, unless it is a brand new part. For a used shifter, that much should have gotten you the whole thing. Part G inserts into the bottom of the plate that bolts down (that has the shift pattern stamped on it). It is pressed in. As Mike said, take a second look at the forks and make sure neither is loose on the rod or cracked. I looked at the website, and since there are very few pictures there, you can't really tell what you're getting. I'd try and send the lever back. Post in the "wanted" forum if you determine that you really need to replace it. I'm sure you can get a better deal there.

Thanks, Bob.
I didn't look real close for cracks because I wasn't sure what to look for.
They are tight on the rail and don't seem to be worn where the lever goes into them.
Wondering if they're too tight because I have broken 2 levers and sometimes they're a little hard to shift.

I'll give Joe a call on Monday about the lever

Hey, Larry...

See this thread... Love to see you if you are interested. Maybe if you wanted to bring your shifter, we could take a look at that as well!
