Cub Steering Box Parts

Is there any other source other than TM Tractor & CIH for the steering bushings (upper and lower) and the thrust washers for the Farmall Cub steering box? I would like to rebuild the steering on several Cubs without breaking the bank. Looks to be around $150 plus shipping to do each one (just the bushings, seals, and thrust washers).

Seems to me that the small bushings and thrust washers could be made by a machine shop if someone had the proper dimensions. I have access to a machinist and would like to have several parts made if possible.

for the top bushing, I take a 1" copper pipe end cap, grind or cut the top off. Then cut through the side wall with a hacksaw. Champher the bottom edge first, so that the gear will slide into it

The issue with using copper for these parts is its much softer and will wear much faster than the bronze that is supposed to be there.

I understand Raymond, you are spot on.

However--(don't you love "howevers"?) Most of today's cubs get little work, compared to when they were built 60 years ago. If the bronze worked well for the first 60 with heavy use, most of them will last forever with this repair with the limited use the majority of our cubs get with the technology of today's lubricants.

Yeah.....those little things (for what they are) are priced like gold! I just figgered there might be a universal source, or someone might have the schematics and dimensions to have some made up by a machinist.....which I have access to without it breaking the bank.

If you were to buy one set of bushings and thrust washers you would have the dimensions to make more. Just a thought. Good Luck! Hope all goes well for you. Frank
