Just wondering if anyone has used the Steiner clutch kit with the "true" Bearing TO bearing as opposed to a graphite one. I'm ready to split my 73 for a new clutch,pp,t.o. bearing. I like the idea of a real bearing, but if no one has tried it here, I'd be leary of it.

99 views and no answers makes up my mind. It looks like TM gets my business again, but thats a good thing.

I've had real good luck with them in the past. I just ordered over 400.00 in parts from them.

There's been quite a bit of spirited discussion about the steel ball throwout bearings over the years, but not as much lately.

In a nutshell you're better off with graphite. One problem is that the TO bearing isn't necessarily perfectly centered on the clutch fingers so there's always some "scrubbing" going on. The graphite bearing is designed to scrub. A steel bearing will wear out and fail quickly.

I think the biggest issue with the steel TO bearings is poor quality.

Hi Tom!

Sorry that I don't have much information about the TO bearing discussion...I'd love to help, however, on your split and work on the tractor if you'd like help!

Mike, thanks for the offer. I'm doing this with my son in his garage as I only have a carport. What a difference moving from a 5 bedroom farmhouse on 3 acres in Illinois to a 2 bedroom bungalow on a lot 25'x155' in PA ! The place in IL was getting too much for me to take care of. My main concern now is getting my 53 Cub and my 53 SA here to PA. I'll definately have some attachments to sell, as my son made a road trip and brought them all back here with my 73 Cub with the bad clutch. We've never split a Cub before, but we'll just go by the book and if we run into trouble, you'll be getting a call.

As many of the more knowledgeable forum members have said: If the original has lasted 40 yrs, the graphite bearings can't be THAT bad

I have a clutch kit like that in mine. The PO installed it just before I bought the tractor. The only things ive noticed are the fingers need to be adjusted out to their maximun right off the bat in order to have any adjustment at the pedal. The bearing type TO wont wear like the graphite, so I assume thats not an issue. I also have one finger that will not stay in adjustment. Im not sure why, but i doubt it has anything to do with the TO bearing. I might try some locktite on the stud, as it is the stud backing out of the finger, not the jam nut getting loose. Other than that ive had no problems.

Clodhopper, Thanks for the product update. I'm glad I went with the TM parts now.
