hi, i have had this problem for a long time now, when i go to shift, the gears will grind, i have adjusted the clutch pedal a few times, and that didnt do anything, i have found that if i push the clutch in and push the shifter downwards, there is a very soft grinding, and it will soon stop, and then i can typically shift with out it grinding, i belive it is the throw out bearing, does anyone have a simple fix for this? or is splitting the tractor and replaceing the throw out bearing the best solution? my problem is my Cub is what i move snow with for a lot of people, and with me i know replacing the throw out bearing wont be a few day project, thanks

I'd suggest that you first remove the hand hole cover (if it's there) and look inside with a flashlight. If the graphite is chipped or worn down close to the metal carrier, it will need to be replaced. Otherwise, you may just need to adjust the clutch fingers. That can be done without splitting if you are patient enough to do it.

oh ok, some one was telling me a while ago that the clutch fingers needed adjusted, is there a way to tell if they are out of line?

Click on the link above to go to the how to adjust clutch fingers. It is a task but can be done. You can make a tool to get in there and check the adjustment.

Also note that there were two styles of clutches offered by IH---a Rockford (designated by a "J" stamped into your serial number plate) or an Auburn.

The serial number only tells you what was there originally. Could have been changed since it left IH's hands if someone has ever done a clutch job in the last 62 years.

Very true, I have not come across one yet that has been swapped out. I believe one of the two styles was more "heavy duty", but I do not recall whether it was the Rockford or Auburn that was advertised as such.

My 1957 Cub has a 'J' suffix but when we split it at Cecil's last month we discovered an Auburn clutch. Problem is you can't adjust the clutch fingers easily through the access hole on an Auburn clutch.
Replaced it with a Rockford clutch, and while the hood was off replaced the leaking rear main seal.

Do the adjusting screws in the Auburn pictured go in the open holes in the release levers (fingers)?

There is no practical difference between the 2 clutches, as far as one or the other being "heavy duty". They are simply clutches from 2 different suppliers.
