As said, grounds are key. Some of us disassemble stuff to clean and paint, things like the VR bracket and even the generator MUST be grounded and it's done through the fasteners and the 'frame' of the part. The VR has a small braided wire that runs to one 'leg' and must be grounded. You can also use dielectric grease after assembly to keep the rust at bay.
For the battery box, I have been using 'rubberized' paint and a long (15"??) braided ground to the base (and axle tube). Not the best pictures, but you should get the idea.
