Cub Air Breather

I'm still learning about this tractor. It was my father-in-law's - I am trying to fix up...

For years the air breather was not connected to the carburetor. I've cleaned it up and reconnected it.

My question is: is there a specific weight oil to put in it? I read (in this forum, I think) that you don't want it too thick or too thin. The books I have don't indicate what weight to use.

Whatever you use in your engine will be fine. The oil isn't there for lubrication anyway.

I've never entertained the thought of trying it, but I have serviced a couple of cans I was 99% sure contained drain oil.

Since it's not for lubrication, maybe people do it for recycling purposes.

I would think for the minimal amount used, one would be better off using new oil. We worked our Farmall M hard when and would service it before and after haying season. I was shocked at the amount of contamination in the bottom of the bowl.

I have several old pieces of case and IH equipment that say in the manual not to use waste oil.... so to me that says if it is was such a common occurrence that they need to tell you not to do it. Then lots of people must have been doing it.

I initially used 5/20 because that's what I had and like you had no idea, but I swear it got sucked into the engine and made her smoke. So I switched to gear oil. Someone will call me crazy for that, but it worked.

Seems like that would cause the engine to be sucking hard to get air. Maybe run a little rich.

Both these industrial tractors were purchased at an auction or company sale and were formerly used for pushing power brooms for a road paving company. They were beat pieces of company equipment replaced by cabbed vehicles but still had plenty of life left in them.

If you have never seen one of these in operation, the dust cloud created is epic.

The air cleaners may have been serviced more than one time per day leading to the use of waste oil which I'm sure was abundant to their operation.

I have seen those dust clouds. Impressive. Maybe it just looked like used oil after filtering all that road dirt. Seriously though, many times good maintenance and commercial use don't go hand in hand. I really doubt those air cleaners were serviced nearly as regularly as they should have been.
