Dad's '56 had push/pull switch. I think he had the dealer install the key lock on the '63 to keep yours truly from driving the tractor around while he was at work, LOL!

Had a JD 1050 and wanted a spare key. Dealer said it took a generic key that fit most stuff. I have tried it in many different greenies and it worked in all of them.
Edit to add. Can you imagine a hundred different keys each for a different machine on a highway job?

Your key and switch is a replacement. The original in 1955 would have been a push/pull switch. Perhaps a previous owner wanted a little more security.
I checked my owner's manual and you are correct, my 1955 Loboy would have come with a push/pull ignition switch. I have some paperwork that shows my Cub was originally owned by the high school in Choteau, MT, being purchased from N & H Implement Co., Great Falls, MT on June 8, 1956. The previous owner told me it was used for grounds maintenance there. My ignition key is obviously old, showing a great deal of wear. Perhaps the school had the dealer install a key switch upon purchase for added security.
