Headlights

Postby Chris Davis » Sat Dec 01, 2012 5:34 pm

Hello everyone, hoped you could help me with a question. What years (or serials) of Cubs had the teardrop headlights vs which Cubs had the sealed beam?

No matter what I do, I have always ended up owning Cubs that had the headlights stolen off them by the PO.

Right now, I'm trying to get my 61 correct.

The lights were changed through the years, 47-early 54, had bulbs, late 54-early 58 flatbacks were a bulb inside of sealed lens, late 58 -early 64 are 6volt seald beam, later 64 up 12 volt sealded beam

There were at lest 2 different style 6 volt sealed beam lights one that has a plug in the back and one that has the wires going into the light

The change from tear drop to the flat back sealed units was approved 5/28/52, but they probably weren't actually used for quite a while. They may have started at serial 165153 when the ground wire was added to the harness.

It appears that the 12-volt round lights had the sockets and the 6-volt ones were directly wired. To add confusion, after the change to 12-volt, a socketed 6-volt light was available with a pig tail to fit the 6-volt version of the harness. There were 2 suppliers of both the 6 and 12-volt lamps. It appears that the 6s were predominantly from one supplier and the 12s from the other.

So Jim-That serial# would be mid-'53,right? Most of the '53 Cubs I've looked at had the early sealed-beam lights.

Yeah, that would be a couple months or so into 1953. Again, I don't have anything that says when they actually made the change, just the approval date which was evidently well before the actual change.
