Oil leaking from pto

Hi all, I have oil leaking from my pto shaft, I have never had this apart before I assume you pull the pulley, unbolt the flange and pull it off, I assume there is a rubber O ring around the shaft, is so where can I get one? any input is greatly appreciated, thanks.

There is a conventional seal in that location. It should be plainly visible. Your leaking issue may very well be caused by an overfilled transmission. Quite likely, you also have water in there. Before dismantling your PTO, I would drain the transmission, flush with kerosene and refill with 3.5 PINTS of gear lube. 90, 80-90 or 85-140 are all suitable. Let us know what you find.

While Don's advice is all good, I will also point out that a bad seal on the PTO shaft will leak, even when the lube is at the proper level. Anytime the tractor moves, the diff. ring gear slings lubricant right at that seal, so if the seal's bad, it's going to leak. The good news is, that's about the easiest seal, to replace, that a Cub has. Just drill a couple small holes in the old seal, screw in a couple sheet metal screws and you can usually pry the seal right out. Clean the area and drive the new seal in and you're done.

Do the cleanup before pulling the old seal. Follow with a quick final cleanup after pulling the seal. That avoids getting anything inside while doing the cleanup.

I just put a PTO back together and the bearing should be greased and has a shield on the front to keep the oil out. I forget how an older one goes together (the one I did was a 77). So in the setup I was working with there shouldn't be much oil up there. Possibly the grease fitting is missing and it's taking on water and that is mixing with the grease to weep out??

This shows the newer (snap ring) setup. The seal will be the same.

I don't think it is overfilled, to fill I pull the small plug on the transmission and fill just till it starts to come out, it just started leaking this mowing season, where can I buy a seal? thanks for all your input.

Whenever you have a seal go out, you should carefully examine the related bearing to make sure that wear, possible pitting from moisture, etc., is not a contributing factor to the seal going bad. If there is any question, a new bearing should accompany your seal replacement.
