ref. 1949 cub. Is it possible for the engine to be running but the generator not charging? I believe I have this problem.

Yes it is, you can check with a volt meter and see if it is charging or not. hook it up at the battery and note voltage with engine not running, check it again with engine running you should see a voltage increase if it is charging.

Yes, it will run as long as the battery has enough charge/ power remaining in it.

Yep it could be the regulator or the generator or the generator may need to be polarized.
Personally i hate generators. I prefer alternators they have fewer parts and tend to more trouble free. Why do you think modern cars, trucks and tractors use alternators.

With that I have probably given the Correct Police a heart attack but it is said.

Like he said
Monstercub,
If you decide you want to convert it to 12 volt and an alternator PM me and I will help you change it over the correct way

I wouldn't sweat it Bill, I never pay much attention to anyone talking about the correct police. As Jim Becker said recently, you don't hear from the correct police as much as you do from people talking about them. I always figure, it's their Cub, they can paint it blue if they want.

You might try this trouble shooting chart

It is for A and B, but electrically is the same as a cub.

If it's a magneto, it'll run without any electrical components at all. Search this site for generator testing. Someone put together a nice diagram.

MonsterCub:

Yup, if it has a magneto, then you don't need an electrical system at all, the hand crank is all that is required. However if you have the Lighting and Starter options installed then you probably have a Generator with a Cut-Out. This chart should be useful:

If the Cut-Out has been replaced with a Regulator then this chart should be useful:

There are many threads that deal with this issue - this is one that dealt with my genny problems - Generator and Cut-Out Here is a general seach for Generator Charging Problems. Hope it helps. Please let us know what you find out to be the problem.
