The rotor in the magneto suddenly stopped turning what could be wrong/broke in the mag to keep rotor from turning

Could be the pinion gear or the rotor itself. Have you took them off and looked at them?

Yes we took the rotor out and looked at the 2 gears behind that but don't see anything else that's visible, when you turn over the motor the rotor doesn't turn, and when I parked it a week ago it was running fine..

With the rotor and pinion removed, does the shaft that the pinion mounts on turn when the engine is turned? Can you hear a "click" in the Mag when the engine is turned?

Look at the gear on the back of the rotor. Most likely it has some teeth stripped. If not check that the teeth on the drive gear (pinion gear) are mot worn off. Another question is are the points opening and closing?

The GSS-5035 Service Manual Magnetos should be of some help as well.

PM sent with explanation. Be sure we have a magneto and not a distributor.
