Farmall Cub

As you all know Im redoing a 1948. It needs a complete wiring harness from front to back.
Where is a good place to get a harness that is good quality for your buck. I like the cloth wrap better than the plastic wrap. The last one I bought was for my Demo. I forget where I bought the harness.

I couldn't find cloth covered for what I considered a reasonable price, so I got plastic. What I got was ok. It had yellow part number tags on each separate piece, which was nice. The connectors were cheap, but overall I was satisfied. The bad news is I can't find where I bought it. I think it may have been Steiner. After I'd already made a purchase, I found a guy at a local bike show who made harnesses using period appropriate materials. If interested, message me and I'll dig up his card.

Jeff - Porch Electric in Lostant, IL does Cub wiring harness - Have no idea on price, depends on how involved it is I think. Check on internet, tell him Dusty from Downs referred you, he just might remember me! (on the other hand might cost you double! LOL !) He did one for me, even came down and helped me install it. They do have the cloth covered harness. Dusty B

Another option: The Cub wiring harness is extremely simple to duplicate if you care to manufacture your own like I did on my '49 working tractor. Using cloth covered wire, each individual wire was cut assuring a perfect fit lengthwise.

Previous electrical system changes are also not a problem such as headlight switch changes, the addition of a voltage regulator or switch to an alternator. Warning flashers, tail lights, stop lamps, and an electric hour meter were added so cabling for all that was included in the wire order.

I used the same gauge multi strand copper originally used for each run and used a 3 conductor cable between the voltage regulator and dash.

I used crimp on terminals with the plastic insulator removed covering them instead with heat shrink tubing. The long multiple conductor runs were bundled with friction tape, not electrical tape and additionally, plastic wire loom was used over the tape at critical rub points. The job came out just as nice as the original harness with matching cabling for the extra accessories.

As far as comparing cost against a premanufactured harness I can't help you there because I didn't price one. If I remember, the whole job was around $50.00 shipping included a few years ago with the runs for the extra accessories.

I ordered my wire from eBay seller "Enginebarn" but there are more sellers now dealing in cloth covered wire. Make sure your order is complete to prevent a second order and second shipping charge.

Ditto on Porch Electric. Their prices are competitive with the others, and their service is as good as TM. They have both the original style cloth, or, for those on a budget, a plastic coated one. I bought the plastic coated one, and it is great.

What Barnyard said! John Brillman will answer the phone himself and take your order. He has the loom machines to make the wire covers and the larger loom that covers the wire harness. Everything is correct, labeled, clear instructions and fits like a glove.

Brillman is my choice and the battery cables are nice also.

Last time I needed one for a Cub I ordered it from Carter & Gruenewald, as they had the less-common variant I needed. Not sure who makes the harnesses they sell. The originality police might frown on how it looks but it's well made and fits nicely.

That said, I completely redid the wiring in my IH 454 with Porch harnesses (there are several needed) and I agree with everyone's enthusiasm for their stuff.

Brillman all the way. Picked up a harness from them for my 1947. The quality was wonderful.
