On my 48 Cub, the right rear wheel turns only a few inches back and forth, I tooked the shifter cover off and also the rear cover off, everything turns and is not stuck. The arms are in neutral position. Any thoughts. Thanks

You say that you took the rear cover off...What did you turn in the rear of the tractor?.. the differential carrier. Since you are in eastern PA, it is cold there... water could have frozen in the right final drive oil pan. Could also be something wedged in between the brake area. When did the tractor move last? Did this come on all of a sudden while the tractor was working or did you discover this new after the tractor had been sitting for a long time.

Just some brainstorming questions!

What is the history on this tractor?

If the differential/transmission is not frozen up - brake band binding. Next thought, transmission stuck in two gears.

Had both rear wheels off the ground, and in neutral and saw the gears turning in the rear. Tractor sat maybe couple of months then all of a sudden was locked up. When I try and turn the wheel back and forth sounds like it is hitting against metal?

checked one out in the middle of a field for a guy a few years back with a similar problem. Took a little looking and searching, and finally found a tooth that had broken off a gear wedged in another (reverse idler if I remember correctly). He could not tow home or load it without dragging the rear wheels. I manged to use a long screwdriver, and push the piece out of the gear and he was able to get it home to work on it. One of the more unusual repairs I have ever made on a call while working for the telephone company.

Hopefully John's answer will give you something to investigate.

In the meanwhile, welcome to the forum!

Thanks to all who responded, I will check everything out, may take awhile till it gets warmer. It does sound like a tooth broke and is stuck somewhere.

I see zip 18074 has had some freezing temperatures and will only get colder. Hope it is ice and not a broken gear.
