Hi guys...got an e-mail from Steiner today with their new offering of alternator brackets..got me thinking as I am getting back to my project Cub..I think I would like to set this one up with a 12V alternator...Anyone have an updated wiring diagram for this conversion..do I need to change the pulley on the fan assy?..I know I need a 12V coil, and lights...can I use the existing charge /discharge gauge...If I were to use a Magneto..Can you run the Tractor/alternator without a battery installed....Thanks for any input on this....Tom :D

I would suggest upgrading to a battery ignition unit (distributor).

I have used a Napa one wire alternator in the past - P/N 2134011SW - it works at the lower RPM's so you can use the early style fan pulley assembly.

Depending on what style alternator and wire qty. you select, someone can direct you to the correct wiring diagram.

"Can you run the Tractor/alternator without a battery installed." For starting with battery ignition, it is necessary to use a battery for the ignition and to excite the alternator. It is NEVER advisable to disconnect the battery while the engine is running where an alternator is involved.

No. I converted to a single wire 12 volt alternator and did not have to change the pulley on the fan assembly or the alternator. It is possible that you will need to exchange the pulley from the generator to the alternator.

Advisable to change the amp gauge. Most alternators put out 60 + amps. The original IH gauge on the Cub was 20 amps.

Is this it? Looks as if the bracket is intended to cradle the original narrow tensioning lug on the alternator and the original alternator base is used for the tension arm in the kit.

The specified alternator appears to be a Denso. The bracket kit alone is not overpriced considering the time it takes to develop dimensions and fabricate one at home. But it will not work as is with a Delco 10SI. The Steiner alternator adds a lot to the cost. But it may be a nice conversion.
Pardon my criticism, but I have seen many poorly done conversions.

And Bus Driver , I have seen some very bad rigs too, most done by incompetent people, The Delco is the best way to go. However if you are not mechanically inclined get someone else to do it.

Contact Clint Carter in the above post. He is making the upper and lower alternator brackets. His quality is outstanding and his parts fit the Delco 10SI or the Delco single wire clone. I did have to shim out the upper alternator bracket - not a problem. Clint's parts fit and the cost of his parts and a Delco single wire clone from you local auto parts store will be less that the previously advertised adapter kit and alternator.

If you have some strap metal, a hack saw, drill press and a welder you can make the bottom bracket that supports the Delco alternator in the upright position. Took me two tries to get it right.

12-v conversion IS worth whatever it costs!---My 72 is factory 12-v and starts SOOOOO much better/quicker than the 49 and 56 do on 6-v.---Also you have more options for electric power accessories on 12-v!
Just make sure that you also switch to negative ground on your battery and work from that point on your wires! just my 0.02 and good luck!!! thanks; sonny

Thank you to all who responded...with a little more research on my own...found a nice wiring diagram...
Ordered the mini 42 amp 12volt alternator..( fits nicely under the hood with NO cutting ) it is a two wire...no big deal.., mounting brackets, 12volt coil with built in resistor, 60-0-60 IH logo ammeter, complete headlight assy's, rear combo light....
I have also seen...actually every one that I've seen..12 volt conversion...looked like a 3rd grader did it...My aim is to make this a professional, neat, quality conversion....can't wait to see how it turns out...awaiting parts....I'll update when I'm done...Thanks again.... :D :D
