4-2-13 UPDATE! 1950 Fcub 4H project resto pics

Postby Jdbfish » Wed Jan 30, 2013 7:16 pm

I have posted many questions here and always received good answers. Thank you all very much. Many who responded asked to see pics. This is a 1050 f cb that me and my daughters 4H group ar restoring as a 4h project. Plan on taking it to several parades, shows, etc. this year and then possibly ruffling it off at next years youth fair and donating the proceeds to the 4h. We are about 30 a 40% complete. Disassembled, Motor rebuilt, governor, etc. most items sandblasted and primed. Beginning to repaint some now. Still lack main chassis and rear wheels and weights. Not sure how we are going to prep for paint, don't want sand getting into tyranny, rear end, etc. so will not sand blast. Any way, here are some pics. Feel free to critique, advise, etc.....

PS we are currently seeking donations in order to complete this project. We need the. Following parts; rear tires, zenith carb kit, battery boxthanks cubguy!, battery cables, steering wheel thanks cubguy!, and a fuel Strainer thanks BDFinch! We also need volunteers with expertise to advise and help. If you or any one you know may be interested, please let me know. We are located in the Waco, Temple, Killeen TX area. Thanks......

Quick tip---buy several spray cans of inexpensive oven cleaner from your local dollar store, soak the chassis and other components with it that you are not sandblasting, let sit overnight, respray the area, and take a wire wheel in a drill and you will be surprised how well it eats through the old paint and grease, and gets it ready for primer.

I sent you a PM, I'd like to help out with the cause and ship you some parts that you are in need of.

Good luck with your project.

What do you mean by a "steering shell". Also, "fuel valve assembly"...do you mean the fuel strainer/separator?

If that is what you are looking for, I have one I just rebuilt and will donate it if you need it.

Great to see a another female "getting dirty"!!

Thanks for all the responses. There was a spelling error in my original post, "steering shell" should have been steering wheel. I have since edited the original post correcting the mistake.....

Cubguy, returned your pm. Thank you again!

Boss, this is not a school sponsored project, simply a project my daughter wanted to undertake to honor my late uncle who owned the cub. Being a very unselfish person, she also wanted members in her 4H to share in the experience if they so choose. That is my daughter painting in the photo. Not shown in the pic is the large roll up door directly behind me when I took the pic that is wide open or the windows that are open on the wall she is facing. There sees to be plenty of ventilation and typically the other two roll up doors are also open but the wind was blowing to hard today to do that. I know this is not the most optimal set up and wish i had access to a real paint booth with all the proper equipment. I appreciate your concern.....

BDFinch, yes I am referring to the fuel strainer. We really appreciate your generosity!!!! I will PM you my info...

In the third picture showing the block and pistons, are those dome pistons in # 3 and 4 cylinders ??? If so will that work.

Is this the picture you're talking about? I think that those are very shiny cylinder walls and pistons on bottom dead center. Reminds me of one of those optical illusion pictures "are the stairs going up or down?"

Those are all flat top pistons. The picture just has a reflection making them look domed. Never noticed it till you pointed it out. Good eye!
