quick opinions wanted

Postby sgtbull » Sat Feb 02, 2013 12:23 am

I posted this on another forum, but the experts are HERE :)

Looking at a Farmall Cub. Not sure of the year, but its an earlier one w/ the mesh screen grill and set screw front spindles.
Here's what I was told and/or saw:

New valves, guides, rings, pistons and bearings. Engine worked over by a NAPA shop.
New right rear tire. Left rear original, but good.
Rims are good
Has rear weights.
One new front tire, other weather cked, but sound
CORRECT, new carb
12 volt conv w/ new one wire alt.
Tin is straight but has some pitting
New manifold
Runs well.
headlights appear in good shape, but no rear light.
Not a fast hitch tractor, but has rockshaft lift arm from touch control.
New clutch, pressure plate and tob.
No apparent cracks welds or brazings. Finals look good but have obvious oil leaks.
Missing air intake tube from breather to carb.
Battery box is junk.
Dist. ignition and looks like it needs rewired to be nice.
Grill bent but salvageable.
I haven't heard it run, so I can't speak for the tranny, but was told it was sound. (hope that didn't mean it was "full of sound.")
Owner wants $1000.00 delivered to my door.

Looks like a good deal to me, but want other opinions.
I've never met a tractor I didn't like....but I have found some that were greatly annoying....

12 volt conversion tractors in my region go for a little more than 1K, up to maybe 700.00 more, you pick it up. And that is in running condition without extensive engine and clutch work. You've been around long enough to know what that adds up to.

Not sure of your location but that sounds like a great deal. A parts/donor cub will usually bring atleast 500 here in Texas. With all the rebuilds and upgrades on that tractor your looking at, it would be well worth the money. This, of course, is assuming the info you were told is accurate. A compression test and a test drive would be advised. Also might want to read this for other tips

You know how easy it is to drop a grand in engine work, if the info is even close, it should be a good deal.

i would start it from a cold start and drive it first , and look it over from stem to stern , for a cost of $1000 dollars . "delivered to your door" will make you feel more "obligated" to buy it . just something to think about . if he is rushing you to buy , for whatever reason , look closer . coppersmythe..............................................ps: unfortunately , some folks will tell you all the right things to make a sale. buyer beware . i will post today (hopefully) my latest cub deal , she turned out sweet , but was somewhat a roll of the dice .

Tractor would have to be fairly close to your location to include delivery in the sale price. My thought, I would go look at - inspect the tractor. Take your trailer with you on the inspection trip.

If the description is accurate, the quoted price is fair. Ask to see receipts for engine work and other parts.
I have an excuse. CRS.

It sounds like a good deal to me.

I would look it over good, crank it,drive it around and if everything is close to what was described to you, I would buy it.

Good luck and let us know. If you get it post us some pictures.

I had a cub given to me and I still have over $1200 into getting her running. Sounds like a good deal to me if everything is on the up and up.

If the owner can produce receipts for the motor work, I'd jump on that. No receipts, then it's just a story in my book. Even without the motor work, that's still not a bad price.

Since you asked for quick opinions rather than useful ones, go ahead and buy it, it is only money.
